Infection (Definition)

Infections are invasions of some other organism (fungus, bacteria, parasite) or viruses into places where they do not belong. For instance, we have normal gut bacteria that live within us without causing problems; however, when those penetrate the bowel wall and enter the bloodstream, ...Read more

I have to have a wisdom tooth pulled it not impacted i've had a few of my molars removed in the past is it going to be the same?

Similar but...: Honestly, it is really hard to answer that question not having seen you, the x-rays of all the teeth (extracted as well as the wisdom tooth). The reason for that is twofold. First, a badly broken down or decayed tooth may post more difficulty in removing. Secondly, some teeth appear simple to take out and yet are difficult and vice versa. In general, if not impacted should be equal in removal. ...Read more

I had an abscess and the dentist cleaned my teeth, which was the one that should've hurt the most?

Abscessed tooth: I'm not sure i understand your question but, a tooth cleaning usually does not hurt unless you have severe recession, inflamed gums, excessive calculus (bacteria). An abscess infection if not draining can build up pressure and be very painful. See you dentist for an evaluation and treatment. ...Read more

I have pain on the gum in the area where I had a molar removed a year ago. The dentist said I could have a bone spur can that be the cause of bad pain?

More info needed: Has the pain been continuous since your extraction a year ago, or were you fine after the extraction and the pain started recently? Not sure what your radiographs show, but if your dentist cannot determine the cause of your discomfort, it would be wise to visit an oral surgeon for a second opinion. ...Read more

Several days: Assuming that extracting the tooth has eliminated the the infection, the swelling and soreness should go away within 5 to 10 days. You should have a follow up appointment with your dentist to make sure that the extraction site is healing properly and all surrounding tissues are ok. ...Read more

This : This is commonly called temporomandibular joint disorder, or tmd (some say tmj, but that just describes the joint, and not the problem). Sometimes the disc that the joint uses gets out of alignment and it can be painful to move the jaw. Try 800 mg Ibuprofen 3 times per day for 3 days. If that doesn't do the trick, see your dentist. If they have tmd experience, they can help, and if not, they should be able to give an appropriate referral. You may need oral appliance therapy. ...Read more

Dr : Dr zweig gave you some good advice. Was the root canal started? You did not clarify in your post. The dead nerve tissue needs to be removed to help the antibiotics work. It may be necessary to use a different antibiotic if you are not getting better. Call your dentist for an evaluation. ...Read more

I was just flossing my bottom middle teeth, and the back of the bottom left chipped off. Since it is Saturday is this something I can wait to get fixed on Monday or should I go to an emergency dentist now?

Thank you!

Can Wait: Tooth or filling chipped off ? Unless you are in significant pain or this is cutting your lip / tongue it is safe to wait until Monday. You should call the office and leave a message so they will know about this and can plan for your emergency visit. If too sharp it is possible to smooth using one of the thick 2 sided cushiony nail files (not metal), very carefully and conservatively. Good Luck. ...Read more

I have a nasopalatine duct cyst above my front two teeth. It causes pain in my tooth. I have taken antibiotics and the pain has stopped. Should i get a root canal done or get thetooth extracted?

Cyst or infection ?: A cyst is not an infection. Antibiotics do not resolve cysts. If it is really a cyst, it should be removed. If it is periapical pathology, then you will need root canal therapy on the affected teeth. ...Read more

Sorry : Sorry to hear about your situation. It is common practice for a dentist to refer you to an oral surgeon for extraction if they feel that complications are possible that they may not be able to handle. On that note the fact that the surgeon cannot see you for a month is concerning. I would call your dentist and ask for another referral or call some oral surgeons in your area to take the tooth out sooner. I would also call you dentist and ask for an antibiotic to prevent infection. Good luck. ...Read more

I have outer ear pain in my right ear after i sleep. I do have a tooth that has a temporary filling on the same side with a root canal treatment. Could they be related?

I have outer ear pain in my right ear after i sleep. I do have a tooth that has a temporary filling on the same side with a root canal treatment. Could they be related?

Many possibilities: Tooth pain commonly does radiate and can be perceived as ear pain. It should be understood, however, that there may be other possibilities as well. I never recommended a temporary filling after root canal treatment. The root canal was done to cleanse the inside of your tooth. Temporary fillings have a risk of leaking and compromising the tooth. See your dentist for evaluation. ...Read more

Hole in my tooth I have a hole in my tooth the 2nd one from the back and it feels like the hole is almost covering half my tooth what should I do should I just get it extracted the way i want to or let a dentist save it?

Hole in my tooth I have a hole in my tooth the 2nd one from the back and it feels like the hole is almost covering half my tooth what should I do should I just get it extracted the way i want to or let a dentist save it?

This : This is a decision to be made between you and your dentist. I would recommend that you discuss **prognosis**. As an example: "if i save my tooth, what is its 10 year prognosis?" this is asking what the likelihood of failure is over a certain time period. If he says that after saving the tooth and doing your root canal, crown lengthening and crown procedures the tooth has a *poor* 10 year prognosis then you have information to compare other treatments and costs to. Removing a tooth typically gives you four follow-up options: 1) do nothing - leave a space, 2) a removable option like a denture, 3) a bridge, 4) an implant. These options potentially have a different or better prognosis. All carry unique risks, benefits and costs. Compare your options taking into account prognosis and cost of the options. These are hard decisions but together you and your dentist can figure out what’s the best for you. ...Read more

Not likely. : While the proximity to nerve, or even nerve damage is always a major concern for lower jaw implants, it is easily avoidable . (via careful planning ; use of ct scan ; today's software technologies. Implants for upper jaw, specially the 2nd premolar area is not a site we are concerned about nerve damage.
