What are the dangers of cigar smoking? I smoked a cigar or two a day for ten years and have recently quit. Am i in danger of getting emphysema?

Little danger but..: Congratulations on stopping smoking! unfortunately, smoking cigars has the same hazards as smoking cigarettes- see http://www.Quitsmokingsupport.Com/cigars.Htm. However, unless you have an unusual genetic predisposition as dr. Ruttledge discusses, most people will not get significant emphysema from 10 years of smoking, if you don't smoke again i like your odds! ...Read more

Is there any cases who stoped after 10 yrs smoking at the age of 33 and died due to lung cancer?

Is there any cases who stoped after 10 yrs smoking at the age of 33 and died due to lung cancer?

Yes but: In any very common disease, like lung cancer, there will be outliers who don't fit the common picture. There are certainly people in their 30s (and even 20s) who die of lung cancer, both smokers and nonsmokers. This, however, is quite rare. The best thing you can do for yourself is to quit smoking, which decreases risk immensely! ...Read more

How can I gauge the extent of damage caused to my lungs due to smoking @4-5 cigarettes per day since past 15 years? Lung function test & x-ray-normal

Could smoking marijuana for over a year cause lung disease?

Could smoking marijuana for over a year cause lung disease?

Sure,: While it depends on quantity, the normal toxins in pot smoke (assuming it has not been sprayed with even more toxic subtances) hae been considered equivalent to a pack of cigarettes. Think about it...Tokers suck it in and hold it down in their lungs, right!? Chronic coughs from the smoke and some depressed immune function and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or worse are risks -. ...Read more

In the process of quitting cigarettes. If i can quit now(age 25) will i most likely avoid all tobacco related disease? Only about 4 pack years

Yes: after only four pack years it is highly likely that whatever damage has been done will be undone, and that the lungs will remain healthy, and your risk of cancer, heart disease and other damage will return to baseline risks (which includes industrial exposures, second hand smoke, air pollution etc.). Congrats on the decision to quit, and PLEASE stick with it. It is difficult, but a good investment ...Read more

Would you say that the damages from heavy cigarette smoking (for about 3 years), are reversible by quitting? Particularly, shortness of breath.

Would you say that the damages from heavy cigarette smoking (for about 3 years), are reversible by quitting? Particularly, shortness of breath.

Over time: The body has amazing ability to heal, but it often takes time. Over time there is a good chance that much of the damage you have done by smoking can heal. It is impossible to say if it will ever be what it would have been if you had not started smoking, but the sooner you stop smoking the less damage there will be and the sooner it can start to heal. ...Read more

How likely is it that I will develop a smoking related disease after smoking between 20-21 years of age and quitting. Been 4 years 0.48 pack years.

?

Smoking cessation: If I read your question correctly, you smoked a total of 4 years and only 1/2 pack per day but then quit. The statistics would likely show that you have no significant increased risk of developing cancer than the average non-smoker. Lung problems themselves are unlikely to develop. Within months your lungs should function fairly normally. If you are having worrisome symptoms, see MD now. ...Read more

28 yrs old quit smoking 8 months ago and teeth decayed what is the chance of oral, throat and lung cancer? Im nervous

Hard to say: As many factors going into determine a persons risk, including how much and how long you smoke, if you drink alcohol(a risk for oral/throat cancers) and family history as a start. But remember, congrats on the stopping smoking and keep with it. Remember to keep up regular dental and medical follow up, so you can't be monitored for any issues. Otherwise live as healthy as you can! ...Read more

I have circuitous of the liver. I quit smoking cigarettes and started smoking e cigarette which is worse I'm planning on quitting soon. Have I hurt m?

Probably not: There is no evidence that electronic cigarettes are worse than cigarettes, just a lack of evidence that they are any better. They do not have the high tar content of smoking tobacco, but they have the same amount of nicotine, and we simply don't know what the other things in e-cigs do - the propellant, oils, flavorings etc. It will not have done any more harm than smoking, and perhaps less. ...Read more

28 yrs old smoked cigarettes for 12 yrs now quitting what are the chances of someone my age having lung cancer? Or has it been to long to repair damag

Glad you've quit: You will never recover the damage to the elasticity in your lungs, and this will take away some of your wind as you get older. Lung cancer's rare at your age even smoking. You will have a somewhat increased cancer risk for the next two decades but it is still low. The key is that you have overcome this godawful addiction. It is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself and those who love you. ...Read more
