Coughing Up Yellow Phlegm With Blood
Started feeling unwell yesterday, today been coughing up very thick yellow phlegm with blood in it. Is this normal?
No.: You need to make an appointment with a health care provider for evaluation and treatment.
Phlegm is the thick, sticky mucus secreted by the surface of the respiratory tract during a cold or other respiratory infection. I am experiencing cough (quality: blood in phlegm, with phelgm or mucus) and arm pain. The following also describes me: Chest congestion. Green and yellow phlegm with blood. Was prescribed zpak. But afraid to take. Is there a substitute?
Take as prescribed: This sounds like a potentially serious infection, maybe even pneumonia. "Afraid to take" azithromycin (Zpak) is not rational; it is a very safe antibiotic with few side effects. Not treating your infection is MUCH riskier than any potential problem from the antibiotic. Take it as prescribed; if you remain concerned, discuss with the doctor who prescribed it.
Constantly coughing yellow mucus with a little blood for over 2 and a half weeks. I also wake up with stuffy nose and with more phlegm to cough out.
Cough for more than 1 month. Got worse in the past 10 days, more yellow phlegm, chest pain, low grade fever. Chest X-ray & blood mormal. What is it?
See a doctor: You have some type of inflammatory process in progress in your respiratory tract, possibly chronic pneumonia, potentially due to tuberculosis, aspiration, fungal infection or some other form of inflammation. You should make a list of your temperatures, associated symptoms and see a doctor asap. If you know an infectious diseases expert so much the better. Good luck and hope you are better soon.
Hi, bringing up dark yellow phlegm with bright red blood streaks, no cough, no sore throat, no blocked nose. Should I be concerned?
Bronchitis: Blood tinged mucus or sputum is often due to an infection in sinus or lungs. Many of us treat, unless bloody nose from blowing too much. Most of us will treat with antibiotics if it happens for more than 3 days. There are other causes, too, but it's a GREAT idea to get checked soon. In the meantime, avoid otc cough and cold meds, and fragrances and aerosols (which don't help, can make worse)See 1 more doctor answer
Direahha, chills, severe congestion, no productive cough, chest wheezing, mucus yellow, green & blood tinted when does come up, ears plugged help!
I am a 22 year old male with a 7 year history of smoking. I have had a pain in my upper right back and have coughed up blood streaked yellow phlegm.
My throat hurts and ears. I have phlegm and when I coughed little blood was in it. Is this serious? Happened inthe morning also yellow mucus in nose.
See below: Yellow or green mucous is not concerning. If there was only a bit of blood streaking, the source was probably a slight bleed in the nose mucosa. If it continues, get seen, otherwise, using otc meds can help.

See someone. Some BP MEDS cause cough. So need more info. Happy to do second opinion.

Depends: Generally, a chronic cough is defined as one lasting more than 8 weeks. The most common causes include post nasal drainage, reflux, and asthma. Depending on the cause, the treatment is different. For example for asthma, inhaled corticosteroids are the mainstay. It's best to see your doctor for testing to determine cause. Your smoking status is also important.
I sneezed this morning and brought up a lot of phlegm which contained blood. Should I get this checked. I don't have a cough or any other symtoms?

But it's always a good idea to go see your family doc for an evaluation as there are too many causes to review ; consider w/more information ; examination.
The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more
