I have a terrible cough that produces either very little phlegm or a mouth full of watery phlegm. Laying down seems to make it worse.?

Possibly reflux: It's possible you are having reflux. Stomach juice can come up from below and cause irritation and inflammation of the throat leading to symptoms that you describe. This is why laying down would make it worse. You can try staying away from acids such as coffee tea and soda, don't eat late at night waiting about three hours before laying down and trying over-the-counter antacid medication. ...Read more

Phlegm (Definition)

Phlegm is the thick, sticky mucus secreted by the surface of the respiratory tract during a cold or other respiratory infection. The respiratory tract includes the nose and sinuses, throat, voice box, bronchi, and lungs. Phlegm is mucus that may contain bacteria, viruses, respiratory surface cells, and inflammatory cells. Better be seen: By your doctor or Urgent Care, you may very well have a viral Upper Respiratory Tract infection, vs allergic problem, in the interim, you may want to use OTC antihistamine as cetirizine or loratadine, saline nasal washes, pain killers, rest and fluids, best wishes ...Read more

Should a child swim when she has a wet cough and lots of phlegm?

Belief system: If you believe that a child can catch cold from cold weather, then she shouldn't swim. If she is having trouble breathing, then she shouldn't swim. If she is happy, running and playing and mobilizing her phlegm, swimming should not make her sick. Most mothers and certainly grandmothers would vote NO SWIMMING. ...Read more

My husband has a had a wet cough for about a week. No previous cold or flu. He's now coughing up very dark green phlegm. What could be the cause?

Infection: Viral infections are common and usually go away in time. When the symptoms persist and the color of mucus changes form clear/yellow to dark green/brown, etc. It could signify the condition is caused by a bacterial infection and your husband may need to see a dr. For definitive diagnosis and treatment with antibiotics. Best wishes. ...Read more

Chronic cough: A chronic cough with nasal symptoms and not feeling sick sounds like an allergic problem. Allergies are a chronic disease that often is annoying but not severe. When severe, allergy patients can have a worse average quality of life than cancer patients. A chronic cough for two months could be a viral bronchitis resolving slowly, or asthma, or a subacute sinus infection. Time to see an allergist. ...Read more

I have stopped smoking now for 4 days and have developed a cough with a lot of phlegm also a runny nose and sneezing a lot so what would help?

THIS IS NORMAL: And congrats on quitting. Our respiratory system is lined with cells that contain tiny hairs that produce mucus which is designed to keep our air passages clear of particles, pollution and assorted other junk we breathe in. Tobacco smoke paralyzes these cells, but when you quit, they start working again to clean out all the junk. These symptoms are signs of a good thing. Stay hydrated & stay quit. ...Read more

This sounds more: Like a cold. Cold symptoms can include nasal congestion, runny nose, coughing, headache, sneezing, sore throat, watery eyes, mild fever, feeling tired ; watery eyes. Tips: sore throat – gargle with warm salt water (1/2 tsp salt in 8 oz of water). Get strep test/culture if very sore. Congestion – saline nose drops or netti pot. How to get rid of phlegm in toddler? My 2 yr old son has constant phelgm and severe runny nose and cough. Please help us. No sleep in our house.

He may need abx: If your son has been sick for only a few days it's probably a viral upper respiratory tract infection there's not much to do about it. If he's been sick for a week or more most likely he now has a bacterial infection and should be on antibiotics. Contact your pediatrician and have him evaluated and hopefully placed on a course of antibiotics for at least 10 days. ...Read more

Cough in infant: Childhood wheezes or cough is common. Cough is a common presentation of asthma or inflammation of the airway. In infant, we don't have a good test to diagnose asthma. Instead, we make a diagnose based on your child's risks of developing asthma like immediate family history of asthma, other atopic diseases... When cough lasts that long, we often start an asthma controller treatment. ...Read more

I have a chesty cough and have coughed hard green phlegm, feelslike it's popping sometimes when coughing, low grade fever, runny nose, is it pneumonia?

Possible: A productive cough with fever is suggestive of pneumonia, either viral or bacterial. Depending on how long your symptoms have been occurring, it would be reasonable to see your doctor who may choose to get a chest x-ray. ...Read more

See a doctor: It sounds like you have seen doctors. How you can be sure you do not have an allergy is beyond me. Suggest that you try nasal saline rinses twice a day with a neti-pot (see your pharmacist), and perhaps combine that with a nasal steroid spray. If you are a smoker or around second hand smoke, stop. The material you bring up needs to be examined, and you need a face to face with a caring doctor. ...Read more

Hi I have a very runny nose of a night and the next morning have a lot of phlegm which is stuck is my throat which I start to cough up?

Ongoing problem?: I suspect this has been going on for awhile? Otherwise, likely a cold. Runny nose with post-nasal drip (rhinitis) can have several allergic and non-allergic (mucosal atrophy, medication effect, irritant exposure, infection, structural nasal/sinus prombelm, etc) causes. The key to effective treatment is to identify the cause. Saline irrigation is noninvasive and sometimes very effective first step ...Read more

Probably atypical: What kind of pneumonia you had? Xray findings? If its atypical you probably need Levaquin (levofloxacin) or doxy or zithromax. Probably need repeat x-ray, legionella antibodies and other atypical work up. Or it could viral (specially with runny nose) so in that case it will take sometime. ...Read more

Painful cough that produces phlegm, runny nose, fatigue and night sweats for more than a week. Is it a cold or something more serious? (no fever)

CXR/TB test/M.D.: Most uncomplicated viral illnesses will not involve chest pain or night sweats. There may be another condition involved. A TB test and chest radiograph may be ordered by your doctor. Sometimes the lining of the lung can be inflamed and will cause pain especially upon inhalation. Flu symptoms tend to improve over the course of one week. ...Read more

I diagnosed and treated me for whooping cough. Is it normal for me to be coughing up phlegm and blood and having a runny nose with mucus and blood?

Yes: Whooping cough, or pertussis can cause excessive, protracted coughing. Small membranes in the throat may burst with hard coughing and blood may come up with phlegm. You may benefit from meds to supress the cough, especially to help you sleep. ...Read more

Cough (Definition)

The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more
