Mgt: If it is prolonged and lasts more than 3 weeks, please let your PCP know. A chest radiograph and sputum culture may be sent at that time. In the meantime, if there is no fever and you feel well, the illness should begin to subside. Stay rested and well hydrated. Read more

Bad cough for about 2 and a half weeks, sometimes thick green phlegm, pain in lungs breath in deeply. What could this be?

See below: Acute viral bronchitis can give a productive cough with yellow/green sputum lasting several weeks. Pain on deep breath may be due to chest wall strain from coughing. However it can be a sign of pneumonia, particularly if you have fever or shortness of breath. You would have to see a physician for proper diagnosis and treatment if concerned. Read more

Congestion: Green phlegm does not always mean an acute bacterial infection, i.e. the type in which you need antibiotics. Often smoldering viral infections end in this way. However, if it persists, recurs after symptoms are almost gone, or you begin developing a fever then definitely have it checked. In the meantime, treat the symptoms. Read more

See a doctor: It sounds like you have seen doctors. How you can be sure you do not have an allergy is beyond me. Suggest that you try nasal saline rinses twice a day with a neti-pot (see your pharmacist), and perhaps combine that with a nasal steroid spray. If you are a smoker or around second hand smoke, stop. The material you bring up needs to be examined, and you need a face to face with a caring doctor. Read more
