Mgt/workup: Your symptoms may be related to a viral illness, including influenza. If your joints are swollen or red, I would suggest a visit with your doctor. If you have a sore throat, then a strep test can be obtained at that time. ...Read more

When I wake up I have to hack up some phlegm. ( very little) it is brown in color. I am 38 f. Former smoker. I don't have a cough. Is this normal?

Maybe postnasal drip: Mild nasal allergies can cause some muscus dripping in back of throat/mouth and collects there during sleep and can turn a bit brown in the am. During day, little mucus/drip is pulled down by gravity, but when sleeping mucus tends to stay in back of throat and thus productive coughing/coughing in the early am. If worsens, call doc for eval. Possibilities..: An acute cough, especially with fever and sputum production, could be due to acute bronchitis or even pneumonia . The continued cough could be related to bronchospasm which can occur after an infection like acute bronchitis and pneumonia. See your doctor since bronchospasm can be treated with bronchodilator and possibly steroid inhalers. Smoking cessation will reduce airway inflammation. ...Read more
