Post nasal drip: could be one common cause of this. When you lie down, nasal secretions fall down your throat and irritate your windpipe. Once you have cleared them out, it doesn't happen until you lie down again. You could try using a decongestant nasal spray at bedtime and anytime you wake in the night with irritation in the area. Some steroid based nasal sprays are available, not sure whether Rx in the UK. ...Read more

COPD: See MD. Even without knowing your age/ medical history one may venture to guess this may be COPD related to smoking or smoke exposure history. Cough mucus: hello~ you are 60y.did you smoke at any stage of your life (probably) and have you been coughing for > 2years (probably), this means that you have chronic bronchitis and thats why. Sinus infection?: It sounds like you may be suffering from a sinus infection. Make sure to check with your doctor about this. You may need antibiotics, depending on how long you've been suffering.
