Mucus: Simplest thing is a mucus thinner called 'mucolytic' such as regular Robitussin or Mucinex (guaifenesin). Active ingredient is Guaifenesin which is very safe. Also drink plenty of fluids (water) to thin secretions while taking Guaifenesin and making it easier to cough out.
