Coughing Up Dark Blood Phlegm
Smoker I've been coughing up phlegm tinged with blood at times I had a CT scan it states that their is cystic changes and a parenchymal density lung?
Parenchymal density: Is a very nonspecific term, unfortunately. It could mean anything from scar to mass to pneumonia to collapse of a small lung segment. Without the images to review, it is difficult to determine. Likewise, there are both acute and chronic causes of cystic changes. The nonspecific report verbiage needs to be interpreted in conjunction with the images themselves and your clinical picture. ...Read more

IM 25 weeks pregnant and have had a severe cold / cough this week. Bloody nose the past 3 days, mucus is a very dark green. Today my phlegm had blood?
See a doctor: With these sorts of symptoms, you need answers. I would worry that your platelet count might have dropped as a result of the viral infection - allowing the blood to become thinner, such that you'd have nose bleeding and blood in the sputum. Hopefully you're plugged into an Ob/Gyn practice - I would call them and try to get seen today. If it's after hours and you're not doing well- go to the ER. ...Read more
Hi, bringing up dark yellow phlegm with bright red blood streaks, no cough, no sore throat, no blocked nose. Should I be concerned?
Bronchitis: Blood tinged mucus or sputum is often due to an infection in sinus or lungs. Many of us treat, unless bloody nose from blowing too much. Most of us will treat with antibiotics if it happens for more than 3 days. There are other causes, too, but it's a GREAT idea to get checked soon. In the meantime, avoid otc cough and cold meds, and fragrances and aerosols (which don't help, can make worse) ...Read more
This morning and had a small cough and some (very little) dark blood came out. I have had sinus headache for a couple days. Could this be serious?
Yes: You should probably see a doctor asap, since sinus infections (if that is what you have) can morph into severe complications, but you might first try sinus irrigation (netti-pot), and decongestant. When you go to the doctor have a list prepared of all the things which have happened and trust they will work things out for you. Do not know if this is serious without seeing you. ...Read more

Hello, I was just wondering what is going on. I have had a cough with phlegm for maybe over 4 weeks, occasionally blood-streaked phlegm.
Hi. I saw 20% of blood to my phlegm in my 1st cough but there's nothing already on my 2nd and 3rd but just phlegm again. What's wrong maybe?
Unclear: It is not clear but hemoptysis is not good. Need to see why this is occuring. Might have a serious chest infection or could come from nose. Please seek care and for sure get a chest xray. Need to get dx for sure and may require more than simple treatment. ...Read more
I get this recurring cough about 3 times a year. Always with phlegm, sometimes with blood (rarely). No other symptoms. I'm 21 and don't smoke.
Don't know cause.: Mix hot water, 1 tsp. Lemon juice & 1 tsp. honey in a mug, then add more lemon juice or honey to taste, if desired. Sip the mixture slowly and inhale the steam from the hot liquid to help reduce congestion in the chest. Or make tea with 2 tsp of Marshmallow root bark per 1cup of hot water (steep in a covered pot for at least 5 minutes). Drink several times a day or as needed to relieve coughing. ...Read more

I never usually cough up phlegm with blood but today I coughed up phlegm with blood and it was thick im nervous and is wondering if its bronchitis?
I have had a cough for 5 days, including phlegm. Today I coughed up phlegm with a lot of blood and my breathing is easier. No blood since. Am I okay?
Likely ok: Usually a small amount of blood after several days of cough is caused by some mucosal damage due to infection and/or the physical trauma of a heavy cough. However, I ask all my patients to notify me immediately if blood occurs with cough because it can be a sign of something more sinister in uncommon cases. ...Read more

Hemoptysis....: The most common reason for coughing blood, called hemoptysis, is acute bronchitis, an infection of the airways. If you are still having hemoptysis after being treated for bronchitis, you need further work-up including a ct scan of the chest and a bronchoscopy, where a lighted scope is passed into the airways. You need to see a lung doctor asap to rule out malignancy, another cause of hemoptysis. ...Read more
