This: This is a serious situation that demands medical attention. You could be dealing with an infectious process (tuberculosis, bronchitis, pneumonia etc.) on the other hand, you could be dealing with a bleeding ulcer or bleeding vessels in your esophagus. There are many potential causes, however a detailed history, exam, and diagnostic testing are in order. Please seek medical care. All the best.

Cough (Definition)

The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

Need evaluation...: Coughing up blood, called hemoptysis, is usually caused by bronchitis. But, it always needs to be investigated because it can be a sign of malignancy. You describe recurrent hemoptysis. You should be seen by a lung specialist since you probably need your airways examined via a bronchoscopy (scope in airways) as well as a cat scan of your chest. If you smoke, you need to quit today. See your doctor.

Why I coughed up bright red blood and now a couple days later I coughed up what looks like a dark red blood clot?

Why I coughed up bright red blood and now a couple days later I coughed up what looks like a dark red blood clot?

Get evaluated: There are many details missing about your case. However, coughing up blood, fresh blood and then clots of blood is dangerous. You need to get evaluated. Go to see your doc asap, hopefully you can bring in the clots to show. Tuberculosis, cancer, abscess, malformations, fistulas can be the underlying cause. Treatment is available, but you need a diagnosis first. Don't delay.

Blood: Probably due to local irritation from the stomach or esophagus. Refrain from any ibuprofen, aspirin or vit e (blood thinners) but you should be seen by a GI as soon as possible for an endoscopy. If the blood continues you need to go to the ER

If: If a patient has had recurrent hemoptysis (coughing up blood), then a medical evaluation is in order to determine the cause. Hemoptysis can be caused by infections, prior infections, or irritation to the throat or even the nose.

I have a left side upper chest pain and I noticed coughing up a little bright red blood at morning only. I got X-ray and ECG done. Nothing detected.

Serious symptom: Hemoptysis (coughing up blood) is a serious issue and should not be taken lightly no matter how little it is. I common causes include blood thinners (if you are taking them), bronchitis (acute and chronic) bronchiectasis, lung cancer, tuberculosis. You should have a discussion with your pcp depending on other symptoms like weight loss, lack of appetite and energy may warrant a ct scan of chest.

I have had symptoms of a sinus infection for almost a month. This morning my nose started pouring blood and I coughed up big globs of bright red blood?

Immediate evaluation: You need to be seen immediately! To to your primary care doctor or ER and get blood work, X-ray, and will most likely need a Cat Scan (CT) of your sinuses. Cancer of the sinuses needs to be ruled out versus a benign polyp vs bleeding from your nasal septum. Keep me posted.

Gingivitis? Nasal?: If you're not coughing up the bloody saliva, it probably is coming from somewhere in the mouth or dripping down from the nose. If it's your mouth, maybe gingivitis (gum inflammation). Wherever it's coming from, this should be professionally checked; see your doctor. Most such cases aren't serious, but you shouldn't take the chance. Good luck!

Depends: Congratulations on stopping smoking. Although bronchitis can cause bleeding other causes may need to be considered. If you are having persistent cough and bleeding an evaluation by your doctor or at an urgent care is considered. Good luck

Discuss with OB: Tiny blood vessels are more easily torn during pregnancy and can cause nose bleeds, blood in sputum with cough, blood in vomit. However, you need to discuss with your doctor to see if any other tests or evaluation might be warranted.

Bright red blood: Is from very low in the GI tract, not the previous gastric ulcer (which would appear as very dark, almost black, stool-what we call Melena). With all the coughing, he could have a hemorrhoidal bleed. In any event, this bleeding must be checked out by a physician.

Not unusual: You appear, by your comment, to have regular periods. But one day each period you'll have very heavy flow. That's not unusual, & treatment can focus on relieving symptoms, like pain control, keeping the heavy flow from disrupting your activities, & screening for iron deficiency anemia from blood loss. If your periods are not regular, then a gynecologist can check for DUB. Hope that helps.

Met: I would advise seeing your physician and possibly an ENT specialist. The source of the bleeding should be determined. It may be isolated in the upper airway for example, without lung involvement. I would also advise though that you have a TB test. If you have a smoking history, history of health problems, these can increase your risk.

Hi, bringing up dark yellow phlegm with bright red blood streaks, no cough, no sore throat, no blocked nose. Should I be concerned?

Bronchitis: Blood tinged mucus or sputum is often due to an infection in sinus or lungs. Many of us treat, unless bloody nose from blowing too much. Most of us will treat with antibiotics if it happens for more than 3 days. There are other causes, too, but it's a GREAT idea to get checked soon. In the meantime, avoid otc cough and cold meds, and fragrances and aerosols (which don't help, can make worse)

Bronchial infection: The symptoms you describe suggest you have a bronchial infection. You should be evaluated for treatment.

I landed on my back on Friday while snowboarding and coughed up some blood and my mucus still has red tint when I cough occasionally today. No pain.

I landed on my back on Friday while snowboarding and coughed up some blood and my mucus still has red tint when I cough occasionally today. No pain.

Could be serious: The two main things I would worry about would be a pulmonary contusion (a lung bruise) or a pneumothorax. It is a good sign that the symptom is getting better with time, but both diagnoses could potentially be serious.
