Environmental??: There are environmental exposures that can lead to black stained sputum. Have you had a sputum culture done? A sputum culture will identify any bacteria present as well as what antibiotics would best treat it. Cannot diagnose: You need to see a pulmonary specialist. Need more history and lung function studies. You may have problems with allergies, fungal exposure in your household and other problems of which you may not yet be aware. Blood in sputum: If it is streaks of blood and not clots, likely from coughing irritation. If it is clot/large amount of blood(teasppon pure blood) it is significant and you should seek immediate medical attention ( TB, cancer, blood clot).
