I keep coughing up black specs in my mucas. It's only just started happening today. Should I be worried? Should I see what happens before getting checked out
Black specs in mucus: Were you in an area of soot? Are there are specs of bright red blood? Any abodminal discomfort/ gastritis? Depends: Dark specs may be blood but may be other. If blood can be coming from back of nose or sinuses, but may be coming from lungs. Blood is concerning when not where it should be, although there is less genral concern when from sinuses. The specifics of the dark spots and their origin needs to be determined. See answer: Generally, if a 28 year old person noted a spec of blood in phlegm after several coughs and had no other symptoms it's likely due to some superficial irritation in the throat area. Hemoptysis...: Hemoptysis, or coughing blood, has many etiologies. It is usually due to bronchitis but malignancy is another possibility that needs to be ruled out. If you have ever smoked, you may need a chest cat scan to be sure there is no malignancy present. Postnatal drip can cause bronchospasm as well as blood in sputum so this needs treatment. Diet?: I'm sure you are worried that this represents blood. Blood coming from the upper gastrointestinal tract is indeed black, but it would not look like black specks on the TP. Specs in Stool: "coffee grounds" usually refers to vomit containing blood. Black specs mixed in with stool most likely food. Bananas in stool- usually have a black spec appearance.
