Cough (Definition)

The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

Cough: See your doctor for the cough and makes sure you don't have pneumonia or cough asthma. For the headaches steam, saline sprays, OTC decongestants (dont take them late at night) and ibuprofen will help. For that long term above the eye pain you should get a ct scan sinuses to check for chronic sinusitis

I have had whooping cough for 6 weeks - have had antibiotics for a couple of weeks but still feel horrible and extemely tired. Should I go back to dr?

If you wish: The whooping cough has the nickname "100 days cough" in adults and deserves it. The later treatment is initiated the more likely it is to linger, and it does so long after antibiotics have killed off the germ.Chronic cough can be quite disabling.

I've had a tickly cough for 6 weeks and have a small white spot on left side of throat should I be worried?

I've had a tickly cough for 6 weeks and have a small white spot on left side of throat should I be worried?

Maybe: Any cough that is lasting that long should be evaluated, regardless of the white patch. The white patch could be from many things and could be related, but I would focus more on the ongoing cough. See your doctor and get checked out-it's been long enough.

Doctor can evaluate: The cough can be re-evaluated to see if it is allergic, infectious, asthma, etc... Lung function tests can help figure things out. When coughing, the pressure inside the chest goes up. When that happens, the pressure inside the spinal column also goes up. The pressure might press on nerves as they come out of the spine, causing altered nerve signals to give the pins & needles sensations.

Seek a pulmonologist: Chronic cough has multiple causes, defined as a cough lasting more than 8 weeks. Post nasal drip, GI-reflux disease, asthma, medications, bronchitis including lung or THYROID cancer. Details of the history such as clearing throat, symptoms after food, symptoms with exertion are all useful to sort out the cause and requires a detailed history and physical by a lung specialist or internist.

The ER dr looked in my ears with the light said they look fine but did not take sample and friend has ear infection I have stuff nose cough 100.6 week?

The ER dr looked in my ears with the light said they look fine but did not take sample and friend has ear infection I have stuff nose cough 100.6 week?

Ear infection- URI: Ear infections are not contagious. They occur as a continuation of an upper respiratory infection (URI). Samples of ear fluid are rarely done in adults especially if the ear exam does not show sign of infection. You likely have a viral upper respiratory infection- antibiotics are not effective in viral infections.

Don't force it: Avoid drying agents like sudafed. Don't try to force yourself to be heard. If you try to force it, you can strain your vocal cords and make the problem last a lot longer. So whisper, or right notes. Nod or shake your head solemnly, and people will think you are wise! The sages of history were known to not speak much. Or, as my ex said, if you need something done just "grunt and point!!! "

Hi, I have been coughing for 6 weeks and producing yellow phlegm. Rib pain has started a few days ago, it's swollen.

Cough: You need to see your doctor and get a chest xray. Maybe bronchitis, pneumonia or cough asthma. See the doctor soon. For the rib warm compresses and ibuprofen may help but with the coughing there is a small chance you may have a fracture

Cough subsided after 6 weeks, any implication.

Cough subsided after 6 weeks, any implication.

Possibilities...: A cough that lasts that long puts it in the chronic cough category. Since it subsided on its own, the most likely explaination is bronchospasm. Other possibilities include gerd, sinus problem or even a combination of these. If it returns, see your doctor for diagnosis and treatment. If you smoke, you need to quit to decrease airway inflammation which would decrease the recurrence rate.

I have had a cough for about six weeks should I service my gprs?

I have had a cough for about six weeks should I service my gprs?

Yes see your doctor: A chronic cough that goes on for weeks usually has a cause. In most cases, it turns out to be post-nasal drip from allergies or sinusitis, reactive airways like asthma or copd, or gastro-esophageal reflux. In some instances, it can be something more serious. Long-lasting cough requires a thorough evaluation & possibly coordination between many specialists, so get checked out.

I have had a cough for around 6 weeks now been to docrors 2 weeks ago giving tablets but still the same?

Contact doctor again: For a cough lasting more than 6 weeks, a re-evaluation is indicated. If you can tell us what is the pill you have been taking, it will help us to narrow down the potential causes. We need more details such as (1) Any type of mucus? (2) What triggers it (cold air, exercise, eating etc)
(3)Any nasal discharge? (4) Any shortness of breath?

Myocarditis: I see you are still fixated on myocarditis. Read the following for general information: http://www. Medicinenet. Com/myocarditis/article. Htm Remember myocarditis is not common and you should see a Doc and be checked to hopefully reassure you that you don't have myocarditis. If you actually do have it, then you need to be treated and followed.

Hi, I've had a chesty cough for approx 6 weeks, I was given a 1 week course of antibiotics and although its a lot better its still there!

Hi, I've had a chesty cough for approx 6 weeks, I was given a 1 week course of antibiotics and although its a lot better its still there!

Common cold: Difficult to know whether you really needed an antibiotic or not, but once you have had infection of the upper respiratory tract (including the trachea and bronchi) it takes time for the tissues to heal and to reconstitute all the functions which may have been impaired by the cause of the infection. Be patient, time will heal.

Dry or while transparent cough since past 6 weeks. Had started when I quit smoking around 7 weeks back. It is normal or something serious. How recover?

Dry or while transparent cough since past 6 weeks. Had started when I quit smoking around 7 weeks back. It is normal or something serious. How recover?

Probably normal: Although it's not common, some people seem to cough more than usual soon after stopping smoking. Tobacco smoking slows the normal movement of microscopic hairs that line your lungs. When you stop smoking, these hairs/cilia become active again. When active, they help clear mucus from your lungs. It should improve on own. Drink lots of water. See doc if persists >2 months. Good wishes:)

I've had a horredous cough for 5/6 weeks it's constant and keeps me awake at night I went to the doctors they gave me antibiotics which didn't work?

I've had a horredous cough for 5/6 weeks it's constant and keeps me awake at night I went to the doctors they gave me antibiotics which didn't work?

Cough: Be reassessed. There are many causes of coughing and not always pneumonia. Some patients with chronic coughing have asthma. Whooping cough is an infection that can cause a bad cough and doesn't always respond to antibiotics. See your doctor for follow up. A chest XR may be indicated at this point.
