I have had a phlegm cough for 4 weeks, major pain in back ribs on right side, also frequintly needing to pee, but difficulty in doing so, very worried?
Here are some...: Productive cough of 4 weeks needs active attention ASAP. The pain in the back part of rib cage (right) may be related with neuromuscular irritation or pleurisy on coughing. As to voiding difficulty, at times, some OTC anti-coughing drugs may contain the ingredients like pseudoephedrine or / & antihistamines which may affect urinary sphincter or bladder muscles so leading to voiding difficulty... ...Read more

My son has been coughing & has phlegm for about 3 weeks. Could it be he is allergic to my sister in laws cat? Is that why he hasn't gotten better?
Maybe: Kids with minor respiratory viruses may cough for a few weeks. This can be aggravated by any of many irritants/allergens. Dust/smoke/fragrance/ cleaning fumes/aroma from laundered linens can all act as non-specific triggers. If the kid functions fine otherwise, eating and playing well without fever, you can monitor these issues at home.If he is acting sick, have him seen. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Coughing up blood in my phlegm a week after being impatient in the hospital for four days for pneumonia not coughing freq. Just pain with breathing?
Hi I have been coughing up brown phlegm for a few weeks I am a smoker aged 27. Chest xray clear. No fever. Any ideas?
Coughing smoker: Stop smoking. Am sure you have been told that many times. Cigarette smoke paralyzes the cilia (tiny hairs) on the surface of cells lining the trachea and bronchi and other areas of the upper respiratory tract. This inhibits normal defense mechanisms to infection which would help to clear those airways, and so inflammatory materials accumulate and must be coughed out. And there are greater risks. ...Read more
May need an inhaler: You may have bronchitis, which is caused by a viral process. Sometimes, I prescribed an inhaler with a steroid and another medication to reduce coughing (LABA). Another possibility is that the antibiotic used was not effective for the bacterial cause. My suspicion is it may be more the former, but you have to work with your doctor on this. ...Read more
