Isn't pneumonia very obvious? my mom says I would be in bed *almost dying* if I had it, but I'm fine. just cough and green mucus. I am very worried

What's ur question?: We used to equate color of mucus w/source of infection. In other words, green mucus required antibiotics to treat infection while clear or white mucus did not. In fact, recent studies show no correlation btwn mucus color & causative agent & response to antibiotics. Truth is most common colds are due to viruses which aren't responsive to antibiotics. I've had a bad cough with green mucus for almost a week. Also I've felt very run down, some chills and very cold like. That's gone away but not the cough and mucus. Will this go away or do I need to see a doctor?

I've had a bad cough with green mucus for almost a week. Also I've felt very run down, some chills and very cold like. That's gone away but not the cough and mucus. Will this go away or do I need to see a doctor?

Depends: Typically these symptoms are initially caused by a virus. Most viruses resolve after about one week though cough can persist longer. Viruses cause secretions and bacteria love standing water. Return of fever (chills), shortness of breath, or persistently productive cough would be signs of secondary bacterial infection and antibiotics can help. If not improving or getting worse next 4 days see doc. ...Read more

Wheezing/Cough: Feeling weak and tired with coughing up green mucus is concerning for infection, somewhere. Wheezing would suggest the lungs. Could be asthma exacerbation, bronchitis. Cough: Yes you could but could also be a viral illness. Would stay hydrated and take tylenol (acetaminophen) or Ibuprofen for aches. If this is viral, it should be getting better in a 3-5 day period. If symptoms progress to include fever unresponsive to otc medications/ nausea-vomiting-diarrhea causing dehydration then you need to see a physician. ...Read more

Dr. can check throat: Throat symptoms can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or other virus (antibiotics usually not used), allergies or irritants, sinusitis, stomach reflux when asleep, etc... Usually, a person sees the doctor if the throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep and review the story to see if sinusitis or reflux might be a cause). ...Read more
