Could be: You should go to see your doctor as soon as possible. Coughing up blood is abnormal. It could be caused by different abnormalities either from the lung or upper airway or could be something else. An exudative pleural effusion could be due to many things including pneumonia, cancer, etc. A sample of the fluid should be sent for a variety of cultures as well as looked at for malignant cells.
