Cough Syncope (Overview)

Some people are susceptible to changes in their blood pressure when they change position, move their head suddenly, or cough. The resultant fall of blood pressure leads to decrease blood flow to the brain. Your brain's idea of a solution to this problem is to make you faint. Now that your head is at the same level as your heart, the problem is solved. A true solution is more complicated.

Are there some genetic reasons I get cough syncope off and on?

Are there some genetic reasons I get cough syncope off and on?

Not yet, but...: I'm not aware of a genetic linkage for cough syncope. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist, just that its not strong enough to appear on current genome-wide association studies, or other linkage analyses. Single gene diseases are the easiest to track and link to a gene. Most complex diseases (like cough syncope) are caused by multiple interacting genes, and are therefore very hard to characterize. ...Read more

Do lots of people get cough syncope, or is it unusual?

Do lots of people get cough syncope, or is it unusual?

Not uncommon: Violent coughing can trigger cardio-depressive reflexes that can functionally slow the heart rate, but also because of the high pressures in the chest cavity produced by the fits of coughing, impair blood return to the heart. All this can combine to drop th cardiac output and blood pressure, resulting in faintness or overt (but very transient) loss of consciousness. ...Read more

My doctors says I have cough syncope? What is this and will it go away?

Too much pressure: Cough syncope is a condition where you pass out after a coughing spell. Many times this is due to simply being dehydrated. The reason this can happen is this: when you cough, you generate a lot of pressure in the chest. This can compress the veins leading to your heart, which then supply the rest of the body. If you are dehydrated, the veins can more easily collapse, causing the fainting. ...Read more

My dad has had a heavy cough the past few days. Tonight he passed out while suspected choking. He came back to, but could something else be wrong?

Yes: First he should be examined by his family physician to diagnose the cause of coughing for a few days. Secondly coughing very heavily can set off something we call a vaso-vagal syndrome and cause him to be lightheaded or even pass out. Most people recover without problems, but have him get an exam as noted above. ...Read more

Is it possible to have a heart attack without any warning signs? Symptoms of heart attack (dizziness, anxiety, cough, fainting, etc) are very similar to other conditions, how can I figure out if those are signs of heart attack?

Is it possible to have a heart attack without any warning signs? Symptoms of heart attack (dizziness, anxiety, cough, fainting, etc) are very similar to other conditions, how can I figure out if those are signs of heart attack?

Chest: Chest pressure, shortness of breath, nausea, and sweating are the most common symptoms of a heart attack. Some people will describe it as feeling like indigestion, or may have aching in the arms, jaw, shoulder, or upper back.

The likelihood of a heart attack increases as the number of symptoms increase, and the probability is also higher in someone over the age of forty. These symptoms are also more worrisome in people who smoke, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or a family history of heart disease. However, it is quite possible to have a heart attack with few or mild symptoms, and while less common, they can occur in people under the age of forty.

Unfortunately, many other conditions can produce symptoms that are similar or identical to a heart attack, including heartburn, panic attacks, collapsed lungs, and pulmonary embolism.

It may be impossible to distinguish a heart attack from other conditions without testing, even for a seasoned physician. For this reason, you should seek care immediately if these symptoms occur. Unexplained fainting should always be checked out promptly. Similarly, chest discomfort or difficulty breathing that lasts more than 10-15 minutes is grounds for going to the nearest emergency room. ...Read more

My wife has been having headaches, sinus issues, and swollen glands. This morning, she had such a bad cough that she passed out. What should I do?

Sinus congestion: A severe cough can have people pass out. Her cough may be related to post nasal drip. She needs to use a decongestant, a saline nasal spray and some Mucinex (guaifenesin) to alleviate her symptoms. She needs to call her doctor to see if she needs an antibiotic to treat a sinus infection. If her symptoms are chronic, she needs to see an allergist eventually to control them. ...Read more

You need follow-up: For these symptoms that are severe, you need to talk to your doctor. It sounds like your therapy is barely adequate and a follow up appointment seems like a very good idea. I would call now and let the doctor know about this. It's possible you need different or stronger medications. With dizziness/passing out, I don't take any chances. Would go to an ER if you can't be seen today by the doc. ...Read more

Cough (Definition)

Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more
