Cough In The Morning Only
Post nasal drip: 60 yo male with coughing up clear mucus in the morning only. Mucus pooling in the back of the throat leading to coughing can occur in the morning because of the hours laying down and post-nasal drainage. Post-nasal drainage can be caused by allergies or infections. If ongoing long-term symptoms, get tested for allergies
The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more
Have a cough. Throat hurts at night & early morning only. 1 side of throat hurts when I cough hard. No phlegm or mucus when I cough anymore. Cold or?
Mgt: If you are recovering from a cold, I would suggest staying well hydrated and monitoring your temperature. Typically the cough will resolve within three weeks. If lingers longer than 3 weeks, please see your PCP.
Cough: Probably due to dry mouth, post nasal drip, sinus congestion or disease, allergy and asthma. If you have congestive heart failure, especially left sided failure, pulmonary edema can cause coughing. If your symptoms worsen or if pain and shortness of breath is associated, i'd recommend you see your internist.
Go see your doctor: Without more information, it's difficult to give more specific ideas. First, if you smoke, it's time to stop. Second, if you're short of breath, you may be experiencing reactive airway disease and be in need of a short acting bronchodilator such as albuterol. Third, if you have a fever, it's a good idea to go see your family doc to see if you have pneumonia. Most bronchitis is viral so no antibiot.
Possibilities...: Cough can have many causes. Morning and at night brings a couple of ideas to mind. Could you be allergic to something in the room where you sleep that you are not exposed to during the day? Or, could you have post-nasal drip that results in a cough when in the supine position? I think an evaluation by your physician is needed to figure out the etiology and treatment plan.See 1 more doctor answer
My 5yr old has a slight cough in the morning and then nothing all day. He is fitting fit ehat could be causing this?
Allergies/dry throat: Do not understand the. He is fitting fit....But cough only in the morning and then fine all day could be related to a dry throat or allergies. Sometimes there are allergens in the child's room...Like stuffed animals in the bed, carpet, dust mites. Generally it is not a big issue unless it is interrupting sleep, affecting appetitie or going on for a while. Ask your pediatrician as well.See 1 more doctor answer
When I cough in the morning, my mucus taste metallic after I had bronchitis and taken the medication. How do I treat it?
Signs of pneumonia? I had a acute bronchitis and after a month I still cough. I only cough in the morning & night other than that I feel fine...
Persistent cough: Persistent cough can be from a number of conditons, including post-nasal drip, allergies, infection, and acid reflux. If you notice the cough more when you are lying flat (night and morning), you may have acid reflux. I would consider this as a potential for your persistent cough. Viral cough can weeks, even if infection is clear so you may need to just give it more time. Discuss with your PCPSee 1 more doctor answer

After 3 days of no nicotine I get chest pain, especially on movement and also phlegm cough in the morning. Is it a normal reaction?
Probably: Soon after stopping smoking, some people have an increased cough related to the lungs starting to mobilize more tar and phlegm. Chest pain is likely musculoskeletal in origin, possibly from coughing so much. Not likely anything serious at your age, but you could also be coming down with a cold or bronchitis. Drink plenty of water and take otc guaifenesin. Stick with stopping smoking. Good for you!See 1 more doctor answer
I have a dry cough in the morning some green flem then dry cough during the day. My throat hurts a little and feels like something there infection?
Many things: Obviously a viral infection comes to mind first. Allergies can cause these symptoms too, and are very common. See your doctor to straighten this out.
Cold/sinus infection for a week; productive cough in the morning. Some better but still have sinus pressure, fatigue, thick discharge. See dr? Thxs
Call me and all will: Be well, actually try salt water sinus rinses, otc nasal steroid like flonase [1 spray to each nostril twice a day for weeks if needed, nasal decongestant like afrin or neosynephrine same way but only 3 days/week or get rebound congestion, if redness pain pus need antibiotic, if not allergic to penicillin, high dose amox is best 1 gram 3x/day for 5-7 days, hence if I'm on that is what you get
Position?: If your cough worsens when you lie down, either at night or in the morning, it may be due to post-nasal drip or gerd. Both of these can cause bronchospasm and lead to cough. The treatments for these are different so see your doctor so treatment can be initiated if either or both of these proves to be the culprit.See 2 more doctor answers
