Why does my cough get worse at night or first in the morning?

Why does my cough get worse at night or first in the morning?

Position?: If your cough worsens when you lie down, either at night or in the morning, it may be due to post-nasal drip or gerd. Both of these can cause bronchospasm and lead to cough. The treatments for these are different so see your doctor so treatment can be initiated if either or both of these proves to be the culprit. Read more

Viral illness: 2 years old child with cough for 2 weeks also vomiting and diarrhea and no fever. This points to a viral bronchiolitis which typically begins with URI symtoms and then lower tract sign and symtoms. Your child should be rehydrated immediately by small amount of pedialyte repeatedly. Call his doctor or take him to ER if he shows sign of dehydration (fast heart rate, dry mucosa, dry diaper etc...) My 4mth old son has had a runny nose and cough for a week. Been taking medicine. Cough getting worse. What could it be?

What medicines??: There are NO cough/cold medicines approved for babies as young as yours. Please see your pediatrician ASAP for evaluation and to discuss appropriate interventions for a 4 month old. Saline nasal drops with bulb suctioning, cool mist humidifier in the baby's room are the usual starting points for managing a cold. If that is not adequate then further assessment by your child's doctor is required. Read more

5 y/o being treated for croup, cough is getting worse- but more bronchitis than croup. Is this to be expected? Croup 3X this year.

Mgt/ workup: Croup may recur and is caused by a number of viruses. I would suggest seeing your pediatric lung specialist. In addition, airway structural changes, foreign body aspiration and persistent inflammation of the airway may be related to the symptoms. A virtual appointment is also available. Making a recording of the sound and noting when it is worse, will help in the diagnosis. Read more

Diagnosed with sinusitis and prescribed antibiotics. Been taking for 4 days now and developed a cough that's getting worse. Why is this?

Cough on antibiotics: It may be a viral infection, in which case the antibiotic won't work. Could be the wrong antibiotic and ineffective for the bacteria you have (e.g. amoxicillin for beta-lactamase containing Haemophilus bacteria). Underlying asthma or COPD can flare up with the infection. You could also have progression of your infection to bronchitis or pneumonia. Some feel better but have drainage that persists. Read more
