I have blood in the urine. I was given an anti biotic for 21 days cotrimoxazole and co-amox is this the correct medication? I have glumerulonephritis
Depends on cause: Neither of these antibiotics is better or worse then the other; they are just used for different infections. In AIDS patients, cotrimoxazole is used mostly to treat or prevent pnumocystic pneumonia, whereas azithromcyin is used for mycobacterial infections. Both of these are common opportunistic infections in advanced AIDS. Either drug may be used for other kinds of LRTI. Discuss with doctor. ...Read more
Confusion: Cotrimoxazole is an antibiotic which is a combination of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole (smx/tmp). Staph stands for staphylococcus, a genus of bacteria. Sometimes smx/tmp will be used in the treatment of staphylococcal infections. Took cotrimoxazole w/o prescrption tonight an hour after my bc pill due to painful uti. Is that ok? Will my pill become less effective?
No interactions: Cotrimoxazole does not decrease the effectiveness of birth control. Having said so, its important that you get properly diagnosed/ treated by your doctor. Misdiagnosed/incomplete treatment of UTI can result in other complications (infertility/other pelvic problems). Recommended dose of cotrimoxazole (sulfamethoxazole 800 mg + trimethoprim 160 mg) every 12 hours for 10 to 14 days for uti. Take care. ...Read more

What dose the drug sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim do to the fact if you want to have a baby. Cause it says not toto taketake if you consider being preg?
Okay: We prescribe this drug, otherwise known as Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) all the time, especially to treat uti's in pregnancy. There is a insignificant increase in cleft lip with this drug. Most doctor in pregnancy will prescribe a penicillin, cephalosporin or Erythromycin as first line, but sometimes a woman has an infection that's resistant to those drugs, and a drug like Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) may be prescribed given risk so low. ...Read more
Acne sulfa: The drug sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim would be able to treat acne but except in unusual cases it is not a good drug to treat acne. The main reason is that there are many other safer medications to use for long term treatment, particularly members of the tetracycline family. Rarely a person can have an adverse reaction to sulfa drugs that can be very severe. I have seen 4 people die from it. ...Read more

I have developed dry mouth after taking co-trimoxazole for two days. Is dry mouth a possible side affect and what should I do?
Side effects: Dry mouth is unfortunately a side effect of almost 80% of most medications. Just simply drink more water and stay away from caffeine and alcohol. These can suck more water out of your body and reek havoc on your teeth. Sugar free gum helps with dry mouth. Water will not lubricate your tissues, so sometimes a saliva substitute can make your mouth feel better. ...Read more
Get 2nd opinion: This drug has been used but from my reading, a tetracycline is preferred as much safer. An antibiotic should never be the sole treatment for acne, and people are recommending now that courses of antibiotics not be longer than three months. The fact that you asked also raises concern in my mind about your relationship to your physician. I suggest a second opinion. Let's find what's right for you. ...Read more
