I was diagnosed with costochondritis, is it normal to wake up numb all over the body, not being able to move my arms or legs? It starts as a numbing, then as it progresses I cannot move my arms, or legs. I tend to lose speech abilities as well.

Costochondritis : Costochondritis is inflammation of the cartilage that attaches the ribs to the breastbone. It is a common cause for chest pain. The condition normally is not dangerous and can resolved with or without treatment. You may have costochrondritis, but it should not be the cause of you to lose your speech ability, become numb and to be unable to move your extremities. These symptoms could be due to a more serious neurological problem. If you are experiencing progressive inability to move your limbs, I recommend that you get emergency care. ...Read more

I was just diagnosed with costochondritis and wonder why my left arm aches so much when my chest hurts?

Referred pain?: The aching in your left arm may be "referred pain" — i.e. Because of the way the nervous system works, the problem is in your chest wall, but you perceive pain in your left arm. It's also possible that there is something else going on in your neck or your arm. ...Read more

Pain in chest near armpit. Slightly swollen. Told prob costochondritis. Starting to have pain/tingling inside of arm down to pointer finger. Thoughts?

Radiculopathy: 20 yo female w. "Chest-armpit" pain & associated radial nerve radiculopathy describes a process occurring in region of brachial neural plexus. 29yrs old with Pain in my left arm, hand &fingers also sharp pain on left side of chest. What else could it be besides Costochondritis?

To ER: Other than cardiac disease which will worsen with exertion and also cause shortness of breath, it could be radicular pain from a cervical level. If you haven't been evaluated by a physician, you should be seen ASAP. Sharp chest pain isn't typical for cardiac disease, but women have atypical symptoms. Even young people can have heart disease. Why take a chance? ...Read more

I have chronic costochondritis, can't take nsaids due to tummy spasms, I get chest pain easily, lift things, putting my arms up, exercise, what can I do?

Topical NSAID's: Costochondritis can be quite painful. It is effectively treated with topical antiinflammatory medications. These include voltaren (diclofenac) gel and pensaid. My own preference is to have a 10 % solution of Ketoprofen made at a qualified compounding pharmacy and apply 4 times a day. This avoids gastritis as a side effect of taking nsaids by mouth and only gives you 1% of the blood levels as those by mouth. ...Read more

Inflamed joint : The point where your ribs join your breastbone actually consists of a joint to allow freedom of movement in chest expansion. These joints can get arthritis, similar to any other joint in the body. This can cause a chest pain which the patient fears is cardiac in origin, but in fact is benign, usually resolving without medication or with anti-inflammatory meds like Aspirin or ibuprofen. ...Read more

Pinching dull pain left breast and left arm, comes and goes. Normal EKG tread. Could it be costochondritis or pinched nerve in neck? Also, hern disc.

2nd opinion: If your ekg is normal, and treadmill and you have a history of costochondritis, then you may benefit from having a neuromusculoskeletal examination (nmm) done by a do, who can check, correlate your pinched nerve to your rib issues, and the dull pain in the left breast and arm while checking your neck out too. Not sure where herniation is, but they can check it out too! It's worth it, and related. ...Read more

Symptoms today are horrible indigestion, numb arm, shortness of breath, feeling weak. I have costochondritis. Is this normal? Heart attack?

Doubt it, but...: No one symptom definitively indicates a heart attack is or is not in progress (many people make the fatal mistake of waiting out atypical heart pain). In fact, "heart pain" is often indistinguishable from esophageal, pericardial, mediastinal, gastric, & chest wall distress. By the same token, where in your gut you have problems may result in very different sensations. See doctor to be reassured. ...Read more

What could cause pain in left hip/lower back for last 3 years. Also, have discomfort in left leg at time, & numbing with slashing pain thru arms & legs?

Back issues: Degenerative back disease would probably be first on the list. Left hip pain is most likely referred, but if lower back (lumbar spine) is ok, next thing would be to rule out sacroiliac joint problem and hip problem per se. Hip problem would not account for pain in the arm, but back problem especially neck issues would. ...Read more

I have quick pains in long bones then all gone. No pain or discomfort after. Might be arm, or leg, might not happen for months or 2 in a day?

Doctor can evaluate: A primary care doctor can check on fleeting, occasional bone pains. The doctor may check some tests to see if there is some problem that might affect the blood, the bone marrow, or the bones themselves. With short-duration, occasional symptoms, one can write them down on a calendar (along with details like what activities were done & what meds/foods were taken) and show the calendar to the doctor. ...Read more
