Highly annoying...: For its discomfort, how it jabs you worse when "need to breathe, " and (unfortunately) how it can last anywhere 2-6 weeks...Very hard to predict. Hopefully the NSAID they provided for you is working--ibuprofen or naprosyn (naproxen) often helps make it manageable. ...Read more

Not necessarily: Costochronditis can occur intermittently. It is the inflammation of the joints where your ribs meet your breast bone. There are many causes. I have burning radiating pain under left breast. Ruled out cardiac & dx costochondritis. This has been going on over 2 years. Is it normally that long?

No: I would be looking for other explanations. Perhaps even post herpetic zoster (shingles)? Sometimes there is no rash. I'd also look for problems along the upper spine. Besides your regular doctor you might also see what acupuncture or manipulation would do but I think you are right to ask for another explanation. Costo-chondritis I would expect to get better with care and time. ...Read more

Unlikely: The duration of your symptoms for years makes costochondritis less likely, but may still be contributing if waxing and waning symptoms. Trial of steroid burst/rapid taper may be adequate to assess if inflammatory component is contributing. If no response, consider alternative etiologies and work up: GI, pain medicine, etc. ...Read more
