What are the differences between cortef (hydrocortisone) and prednisone in terms of replacing natural cortisol. Other than the potency. ?

Prednisone vs HC: The biggest difference between Hydrocortisone (cortef) and Prednisone is the amount of time they stay in yor bloodstream or half life. Prednisone has a longer half life then Hydrocortisone and is give once a day vs twice a day with hydrocortisone. I am to begin taking cortef (hydrocortisone) at moderate dose, prob for a couple years at least. What can I do to protect my health and what should I look out for?

I'd recommend: U follow up with your dr and endocrinologist who should closely monitor your pituitary and adrenal status. It's a sensitive issue to maintain and taper off someone on chronic steroid use. Dermatologist prescribe for one week child 0.1%hydrocortisone cream , can we dilute this cream?

Dermatologist prescribe for one week child 0.1%hydrocortisone cream , can we dilute this cream?

Will it even work?: Hydrocortisone is the weakest of all topical corticosteroid agents. It is sold over-the-counter in concentrations 5 to 10 times the potency of the prescription given to your child. I have never heard of a potency so very weak & have to wonder if it will work at all. If you think it still too strong you should try alternative medications first. But your concern may be groundless. ...Read more

After 11 yrs illness, been put on cortef (hydrocortisone) to see if it improves severe fatigue, muscle weakness, pain. Don't have addisons tho. Is it still safe?

Caution: Taking a corticosteroid isn't something that should be done without a diagnosis, especially at your young age. There are several potential side effects. If you do not have addison's then i would ask what the diagnosis is, and what the treatment duration is. If you haven't had a rheumatology evaluation that would be a good next step. ...Read more

I have been put on cortef (hydrocortisone) for adrenal insufficiency? How long is the treatment? I'm worried it is permanent.

Might be Permanent: Different things can cause this. If you have addison's disease then this is most certainly permanent. If you were previously on a long course of steroids for immunosuppression, this may be temporary, in an effort to prolong the steroid weaning process. Please ask your physician to explain the cause and what to expect from your adrenal insufficiency to you. ...Read more
