Copd (Definition)

Bronchitis is considered chronic if you cough and produce excess mucus most days for three months in a year, two years in a row. What are some of the tests for COPD?

Pulmonary Function: The test to diagnose COPD is a pulmonary function test (PFT) that is done after a history and physical exam is suggestive of COPD. The PFT will confirm the diagnosis of COPD and indicate the severity of the disease. The PFT can also detect other lung diseases that share many symptoms of COPD that would require different treatment. ...Read more

Can COPD test results change over time?

Yes : Pulmonary function tests typically "deteriorate" as you get older. If a person has impaired pulmonary function as a result of copd, the results can also deteriorate over time. The rate of this decline is variable and is affected by certain variables including tobacco use and genetics. The test results (if performed in a steady state) typically do not improve over time. ...Read more

Would o2 levels be normal on a stress test if someone had copd?

Would o2 levels be normal on a stress test if someone had copd?

COPD and stress test: It depends on the "severity" of your copd. Some people are obstructed but have no problem with their oxygen level. You cannot rule out COPD or emphysema just based on a stress test. You can say that if you had copd, it is not that severe since your oxygen remained normal. To rule out copd, one has to undergo pft or pulmonary function tests which would let us know if your airways are obstructed. ...Read more

Diagnosed 10yr ago with asthma, COPD and sarcoid. All recent test results now say only sarcoid. Can asthma and COPD disappear?

Diagnosed 10yr ago with asthma, COPD and sarcoid. All recent test results now say only sarcoid. Can asthma and COPD disappear?

Yes: Asthma oftne disappears. 'copd' is a measurement on spirometry, not a real disease; patients with asthma will test as having 'copd' much of the time. Now please forgive me. You're smoking up to two packs a day. This is a terrible idea if you have a history of asthma / 'copd' and bad even if you don't or only have sarcoid. Please talk with your physician about smoking cessation. Thanks. ...Read more

Inhalers: Regardless of your genetic predisposition, if you have been diagnosed with COPD, the mainstay of treatment is inhalers. Diagnosis is made by PFTs, pulmonary function tests, where they measure how much & how fast you breathe through a tube. Treatment mainly cnsists of steroids inhalers & short-acting inhalers like Albuterol. Long-acting inhalers are used for more severe disease. Good luck, TTYD ...Read more

I've got COPD my co2 blood test results came back low, what does this mean?

I've got COPD my co2 blood test results came back low, what does this mean?

Carbon dioxide...: In copd, if you are unable to effectively breathe, your carbon dioxide level would be high. If your oxygen level is low, one compensation is to increase your ventilation, if possible, resulting in low carbon dioxide levels but higher oxygen levels. This usually is what happens earlier in the disease process. ...Read more

What sort of lung (function) tests can rule out or confirm early stage COPD?

PFT...: A pulmonary function test can diagnose if there is an obstructive defect present. If it does show airway obstruction, it is repeated after a bronchodilator is given. If the obstruction is still present post-bronchodilator therapy, then it is called chronic obstruction and, in conjunction with clinical signs and symptoms, a diagnosis of COPD can be made. A lung doc can confirm and treat COPD! ...Read more

What to do if I have COPD my co2 blood test results came back low, what does this mean?

Low CO2...: COPD is a chronic lung disease. If your carbon dioxide level is low, it means you are breathing deeper and/or faster and you are "blowing off" your carbon dioxide. It is often a sign that you are working harder to breathe. If your oxygen level is normal, it means you are able to get in enough oxygen. If your oxygen level is low, supplemental oxygen is prescribed. ...Read more
