Birth Control Pills (Definition)

Also known as oral contraceptives, birth control pills are highly effective oral medications that use hormones to prevent pregnancy. There are two main types of birth control pills: one with estrogen and progestin (also known as the combination pill) and one with just progestin. The two main ways they prevent pregnancy are: 1) The hormones thicken the cervical mucous, which keeps sperm from entering the uterus on their way to the egg; and 2) By maintaining a level of hormone in the blood stream that prevents the ...Read more

Any birth control: Pill can help with mood swings. In my experience, there isn't a particular pill that is better than any other. However each pill can have a different effect on an individual woman. Try and see what happens. Often mood swings are related to the Progesterone in the pill. So if one pill doesn't help i will prescribe another bcp with a different progesterone. Levlen (ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel) has potent progesterone. ...Read more

Is my hormonal birth control pill causing my depression? I have been on birth control consistently (no placebo pills, just straight pills, due to my horrible menstruation), for about 6 months now, and I have been having horrible mood swings and extreme de

It's possible.: If the depression began when you started the pills and correlates with your use of the pills, then it is possible. I would suggest switching to a different ocp with different progestin component than the one you are currently on - to see if your symptoms improve. There is also one ocp that has a unique estrogen as well (natazia) that may have a different effect on your mood, and may be worth tryi. ...Read more
