I cannot stop coughing? I've been coughing for an hour straight. I'm taking guaifenesin/codeine syrup
Response: I see your recently had bronchitis and could not take mucinex (guaifenesin). I am not one to favor cough suppression as the cough reflex is natural in trying to remove substance in the airways which does not belong there. I have also seen nausea and emesis with hydrocodone and not with codeine. Only way to know is to try it. ...Read more

Time for a visit: Most viral infections (colds) should improve after a week. Since your child's symptoms have lasted longer than that and are expanding I would consider a medical office visit. Cough at night may be reactive airway disease and might benefit from inhaled albuterol. There is a mild respiratory infection - Mycoplasma - that can cause mild cough for weeks especially at night. ...Read more

Dose?: Zyrtec & Benadryl (diphenhydramine) are very similar. He should get similar relief if he's taking the right dose for his weight. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) will make him more drowsy.
