Constipation: Drink lots of water, increase the fiber in your diet with things like apples and green leafy vegetables, exercise if your doctor says ok. There is also a product called docusate sodium ( colace) that you can ask your doctor about. Some of the prenatals on the market even include this as the vitamins can cause constipation. IBS and pregnancy: IBS is actually poorly studied in pregnancy. About 1/3 of pregnant women report constipation, usually late in the pregnancy, and another 1/3 report increased stool frequency. In addition, increased stress during pregnancy can make IBS symptoms worse. Increasing fiber intake often helps. You should increase fluid intake also. If on IRON: The iron in the prenatal vitamin, or if you are even on a supplemental Iron pill can cause the stool to be black. Call your GYN to assure you are on an iron supplement.
