Floating stool can be a sign of malabsorption. But wouldn't blood and stool tests point towards this? How does one test for malabsorption?

Stool fat: There are many malabsorption tests.
One is a stool 72 hour collection of fat- you collect all the stool and the lab determines how much fat is in the entire collection.
Other tests include stool enzymes such as chymotrypsin. A fecal calprotectin may be elevated in patients with crohn's. See your doctor for an evaluation. ...Read more

Worried about malabsorption (occ. Floating stools) had negative CT scan and qualitative fat test. Gastro. Dr. Said quantitative test unnecessary. Why?

No fat in stool: If a qualitative test was negative then that meant there was no fat present in the stool at a detectable level. A quantitative test for the same thing would therefore be useless because there is nothing to measure. ...Read more

Does it stand to reason that floating stool in the absence of fat malabsorption(normal CT scan and 72hr fat test isn't be caused by pancreatic cancer?

Floaters: 99% of floating stools are caused by trapped gas. This is the truth in spite of what you might pick up from 'pop' accounts. It happens to me if I chew gum. Congratulations on not using tobacco. Keep an eye on the stomach issues -- and if the pain changes, consider a check once again. Five month old stooling four times a day. He is at 60% for weight and 90% for height, no apparent weight problems. Could this be malabsorption?

May be normal: If your baby is breastfeeding, four stools daily is entirely normal. If on formula, this may still be normal. If the stools are odorous and loose, it may suggest a lactose intolerance if he/she is on a dairy-based formula, however. Tough to say: Stool that floats in water is sign of fat malabsorption, because stool that is high in fat content means that your body did not absorb it. It is a very crude test. If you need to know, you need a 24-hour stool collection and send to lab to test fat content. ...Read more

Is this an alternative medicine fad? "Stool that sticks to toilet bowl can be a sign of malabsorption, disease, etc?"

This is not a sign!: Stool sticking to toilet bowl is not a sign of malabsorption. Watery stool is more often an indication of malabsortion of carbohydrates; excess gas often accompanies. In fat malabsorption the stool becomes more "oily". ...Read more

STOP being: A STOOL WATCHER!!!!! MANY substances pass into the stool unchanged (eg nuts, corn, etc) and mucous is a NORMAL part of stool (excreted by an irritated colon)
"Floating " is due to FAT ingestion! So COME ON NOW!!!! STOP WATCHING and if you CAN'T discuss this with your Primary Care Provider (PCP)

Vit D supplements: Are you having GI or bone sx? Renal problem? Have you had supplements and remain low? GI problem. I am 68, male and had my retum removed due to colon cancer. After the removal I had loose stools and went on Immodium for 8 years but then stopped. What else could this be? Tests for malabsorption?

Loss of bowel: When rectum removed one usually has anal region resected otherwise this was a low anterior resection removing left colon to anal canal just above sphincters which control bowel movement. Function of left colon is to absorb remaining water in stool as it approaches rectum. If too much resected then liquid stool approaches anal canal and loose or liquefied stool approaches anus. Try Lomotil (diphenoxylat and atropine) ...Read more
