What is artificial insemination?

Sperm into uterus

Medfrd1804
IUI is process of putting prepared sperm in the uterine cavity. Used to treat poor mucus, mild male factor, unexplained infertility-UI, single women or lesbians and sometimes when couple cannot have sex themselves. It works but less than natural intercourse in fertile couples. Often we add superovulation. Works best when UI and normal tests. Best wishes.

Dr. Scott Roseff answered:

What are artificial insemination success rates?

It varies!

Endometriosis
Insemination, or IUI, has success rates that will vary a lot according to such factors as the woman's age, presence of endometriosis, and quantity/quality of sperm being inseminated. Also, some women do "natural cycle" IUI (no drugs), while others use fertility drugs. The success rates average about 10% per attempt (no drugs) and up to 25-30% per cycle with meds.

When should a couple consider artificial insemination?

Multiple reasons

With infertility, an insemination is useful first of all with unexplained infertility or when there is mild male factor infertility (mild abnormalities on semen analysis). If you have irregular periods and ovulation pills don't get you pregnant then it is reasonable to add in IUI as well.

can a woman with herpes do artificial insemination?

Yes

Women
An active Herpes outbreak is only a concern at the time of vaginal delivery. An initial Herpes infection would not be good during the pregnancy, but recurrent outbreaks are usually not problems for the baby.

Can you get infections through artificial insemination?

Rare but possible

Open-uri20120706-6390-xoe086
If there's signs of a male bacterial infection, with infection-fighting white blood cells in the sperm (pyospermia) we would not use that specimen for an Intrauterine Insemination or IUI as we might spread infection to the uterus or tubes. Viral infections like Hepatitis B, Hep. C, and HIV can be transmitted by sperm, so sperm donors are tested. Washing the sperm for IUI doesn't remove all virus.

How dose artificial insemination work and how much cost?

Simple

Cervix
The sperm is washed and prepared in advance to so that any chemicals in the fluid around the sperm are removed. then the sperm is placed in a small catheter and that catheter is placed into the cervix through a speculum. This is done in the office and usually takes about 2 minutes or less. The cost is variable to each practice but likely averages about $500

Why is it Artificial Insemination become controversial?

Not really.

Nothing really controversial about it, it's done in animals all the time. There are religious issues about it, but just like with any aspect of sexuality.
