Conjunctivitis Pregnancy Polymyxin B And Trimetoprim
When your due date arrives, you will be more than ready to have your baby! Most women deliver the baby somewhere between 37 and 42 weeks. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, only 5% of babies arrive on the exact due date. Approximately 7% of babies are not delivered by 42 weeks, and when that happens, it is referred to ...Read more
Sulfates not sulfa: Polytrim (polymyxin b and trimethoprim) contains sulfates. A patient history of allergic reaction to sulfa drugs should not exclude polytrim (polymyxin b and trimethoprim) as a treatment. There seems to be no correlation between trimethoprim sulfate and sulfa sensitivity. However, one can be allergic to anything. Check with your treating doctor. ...Read more
Is polysporin (bacitracin and polymyxin) Antibiotic drops for external eye/ear infections, such as Pink Eye ok to take at 38 weeks pregnant?
It's probably safe: Polysporin (bacitracin and polymyxin) drops are considered "class C" during pregnancy, which basically means that there is not enough good data in the medical literature to say whether it is harmful or safe. That being said, the systemic absorbtion of topical drops applied to the eye/ear is fairly low (meaning very little will actually make it into the blood stream), which makes harm to the fetus unlikely. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Inner vs Outer: If this an inner ear infection then the antibiotic ointment will not be helpful. I recommend making an appointment with your PCP or an ENT to see if you have an infection. If you have already been diagnosed with 'otitis media' commonly referred to as an inner ear infection then the ointment will not help. Good luck to you ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Is polytrim eye drops ok for someone allergic to bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) sulfa?
Depends: If you have a well documented history of an anaphylactic reaction to Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) and sulfa in the past (you could not breath and had to go to the er), it is better to choose a different eye drop as you can get a similar allergy with polytrim. In my experience, prior history of "allergy" may not be a true allergy. But tell the md who treated you to be on the same side. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Depends: It really depends on the cause of the pink eye. The most common cause is due to a virus, in which case iit is generally supportive treatment with artificial tears. Bacterial infections are treated with antibiotics; inflammatory processes with steroids and non-steroidals; and allergies with anti-histamines. You need to see an eye md to find out what you have. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Does bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) forte for 10 days 2 pills per day can eradicate streptococcus agalactae type b found in sperm culture?I also gave bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) for my wife too
Need more info: Group b streptococci are common vaginally as colonizers, and the only issues that arise are if your wife is pregnant. It then creates a risk for the baby. If you are not symptomatic your penis was probably colonized by the organism in your wife's vagina. It is possible, but not absolute, that the antibiotics you are taking will eliminate this, but unless you are ill there is no reason to treat. ...Read more

Can I take bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) (amoxicillin generic) 24hrs after plan b pill and still have the pill be as effective?
Yes: Neither Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) nor amoxicillin (the two are different types of antibiotics) should alter the effectiveness of Plan B. Taking Plan B or other emergency contraception pills can alter the timing or quality of the current menstrual cycle bleeding and perhaps the upcoming cycle. One should check a urine pregnancy 3 weeks after taking Plan B, as Plan B works most of the time but not all of the time. ...Read more
Yes: The two medications are different classes, the former is for a bacterial eye infection, and the later is for the itching that occurs with allergies. A caveat would be if you are trying to decrease some untoward side effect of too much polysporin (bacitracin and polymyxin) use, which can cause a contact dermatitis and conjunctivitis. I'd make sure that you follow up with your eye doctor if you are still experiencing eye issu. ...Read more
