Yes: A sinus infection occurs when bacteria (most commonly) grow and create pain/pressure in one of the sinuses. Many times, one of the ostia, the openings from the sinus into the nasal passages get plugged up for various reasons without typical sinsus symptoms. Recently had a patient with severe sinusitis whose only symptom was a bad cough. Otherwise felt fine. ...Read more
How long?: If it is a chronic problem, there are many potential causes but hay fever being the most common. Sometimes the nose may start running after reduction of the nasal congestion. Claritin may dry up the nose but does nothing for decongestion. Claritin-d may be a better bet although it may also keep you awake at night. See an allergist if this problem continues. ...Read more
Allergy vs. Cold: Stuffy runny nose with congestion can be due to seasonal (or other) allergies, but can also be due to viral or bacterial infections involving the nose & sinuses. If accompanied by fever, sinus pressure/pain, or swelling/tenderness over the sinuses, these symptoms may warrant antibiotics. Allergies can also be treated with routine medication use over the counter or by prescription. Hope this helps! ...Read more
Generally not: There is no mechanism that increases nasal secretions when congestion goes down. Many people notice this, however. The best way to tell that congestion is improving is that it's easier to breathe through your nose. Ipratropium nasal spray from your physician will help if the runny nose is bothersome. ...Read more

Saline vs decongest.: Most pediatricians would recommend saline nasal drops and the tincture of time. My one year old has been having congestion nd runny nose for about two months already. Is it normal?
It depends: If your child has congestion and runny nose, but is acting well (eating and sleeping well), it may be allergy related. In many parts of the country, spring and fall allergies can be really severe. Give him lots of fluids to keep the mucous loose, suction his nose with saline drops, and use a cool mist humidifier as needed. Call your doctor if he has a fever >101 for >2-3 days, or is acting sick. ...Read more
Child has runny nose/congestion all the time on and off ever since school started. What could be the cause for ongoing congestion?
Allergic rhinitis: Persistent nasal congestion with sneezing and clear nasal drainage, without fever, is suggestive of allergies. This usually responds nicely to over the counter allergy medications intended to be taken once daily. It is also not uncommon for young children to get upper respiratory infections once a month during early years of daycare or elementary school (usually viral). ...Read more
My 18 month old son has had a runny nose for a few days. Now. He seems to be dealing with some congestion coughing a little. But his nose is full.?
Unfortunately there are no longer over the counter cold medication for infants and toddlers.. . . You can try giving him menthol baths using johnson and johnson, menthol baby wash, you can use Vicks rub as long as he is wearing a tshirt to avoid rubbing his eyes. Also the Vicks vaporizing mentholated pads work well when placed under a crib.
If he has a fever, see your doctor. ...Read more

Fifth's Disease: The rash of fifth's disease can last for up to 3 weeks, but generally the associated low grade fever, cough and congestion comes early on and is gone with in a week. It sounds perhaps like a new viral upper respiratory infection might be responsible for the new symptoms. ...Read more

Yes.: Yes it can. During this cold season it is possible that the symptoms are related to allergies (called allergic rhinitis) or something called non allergic rhinitis. Both conditions have overlapping symptoms with runny nose and swollen nasal passages that lead to nasal congestion and sometimes sneezing. The important thing is to see a doctor to make the diagnosis and begin the correct treatment. ...Read more
See an allergist: That would help better, although getting a humidifier might help, but momentarily, if you really live in a very dry environment, it would soothe some. Looking for a cause for your symptoms and treating it is useful in the long term, start with your doctor, check aaaai. Org or acaai. Org for an allergist in your area, good luck ...Read more

Infection?: Try a different antihistamine, like Benadryl (diphenhydramine). If 25-50 mg of Benadryl (diphenhydramine) makes no difference, then it is not likely that your symptoms are due to allergies. There is no good evidence that mucinex is much help and it is expensive and has its own side effects, and I never recommend it. Avoid fragrances and aerosols while sick (add to irritation of respiratory tract). See MD if no better in 2-3 days. ...Read more
Yes, usually: Nasal congestion and runny nose can be a symptom of many disorders. If the underlying problem is allergies, nasal steroid sprays are very effective and antihistamines help. If symptoms are from a cold, it will just take time. If symptoms are from sinus infection, then antibiotics will be useful. If symptoms are related to pregnancy, they will resolve when the baby is born. ...Read more

I don't have a runny nose or cough but I can feel a lot of congestion in my chest and its difficult to breathe sometimes. What should I do?
That depends...: Depends on how long the symptoms have been going on and whether there are associated symptoms such as swelling in the ankles, wheeze, fever, worsened breathing when lying flat and a number of other questions and physical exam data points. Try mucinex (guaifenesin) to loosen any phlegm. If symptoms are long-standing, an exam by a physician at a minimum. ...Read more

What can I do to help relieve my 7 month old son's congestion and persistent runny nose? I want to avoid over-the-counter cold treatments if possible.
Infant meds: Most medications are neither approved or recommended for infants. Normal saline drops to the nose can help loosen secretions and possibly decrease swelling (avoid excessive bulb suction as this traumatizes the membranes of the nose and worsens swelling). Cool mist humidifers may also help. Zyrtec (cetirizine) is approved for 6 months and older if an allergic component is suspected. ...Read more
My baby had chest congestion but no runny nose. I've been using a vaporizer. Now her nose has started running. Doesthis mean she's getting better or worse?
Depends: Both are symptoms of a common cold and can appear at different times, but do not mean it is getting worse. However, if the symptoms are lasting more than 7-10 days or there are additional symptoms including, but not limited to such as fever, difficulty breathing, wheezing, I would recommend seeing a pediatrician. ...Read more
