Lying supine: This syndrome may actually be due to postnasal dripping of mucus or actual gastroesophageal reflux as you lie in a supine position during sleep. If you have normal breathing during exertion or exercise, it is quite unlikely that you have any disorder of the heart or lungs. Try sleeping with your head and chest in more of an upright position-that is, above your abdomen which helps reflux. ...Read more

See doctor: Although chronic sinusitis may be associated with coughing and worsening in asthma, it does not per se cause a productive cough and expiratory wheezing. I suspect that you are suffering from asthma. Recommend that you consult an allergist who will likely be able to find out the cause for your chronic sinusitis and chest congestion. You may have upper airway obstruction which needs be considered. ...Read more

My cough/chest congestion is not going away. I have tried OTC syrups, antibiotics, nasal irrigation. What could be issue. Mornings are the worse.

Depends: I would need more information, i.e., duration of cough, related symptoms (shortness of breath, heartburn), risk factors (smoking, caffeine, eating before lying down), past history (asthma, gerd). It is possible whatever infection you had resolved, but your airway is still inflamed - a trial of inhaled or oral steroids may help. It is also possible that you have GERD. Follow up with your clinician. ...Read more

Options: You have a complicated list of symptoms. These symptoms could be present from either a bacterial or a viral infection. It is probably most prudent to follow up with the doctor that has prescribed antibiotics and review your symptoms with them. ...Read more

Maybe, maybe not: Some of these symptoms are seen with pneumonia, such as cough, chest congestion, etc, but they may be seen with other problems such as bronchitis or asthma exacerbation. A normal chest xray is a factor against pneumonia but is not always 100% accurate. The best approach would be to discuss the situation with ones doctor and determine if there is an infection or non infectious lung issue. ...Read more

Depends: Both are symptoms of a common cold and can appear at different times, but do not mean it is getting worse. Control the asthma: It is understandable that when one can't breathe well, one often gets anxiety and thus you need to see someone, preferably an allergist, to get your asthma under control since you are not taking anything for it.
On the other hand, anxiety can worsen asthma and only when we can get your asthma under control can we be certain on which is the chicken and which the egg. ...Read more

Allergy??: See your doc first. Most coughs don't require antibiotics. Your doc should get a good history and good physical exam. You might have allergy or asthma or very commonly post nasal drip, none of which require antibiotics. Or you might have a viral infection which also doesn't respond to an antibiotic. Get well soon. You can always use Jewish penicillin-I.e. chicken soup! ...Read more
