Thyroid gland diffusely heterogeneous, with a 3mm cyst in left thyroid lobe, what does that mean??
Thyroidologist: Rather than being homogeneous, your thyroid composition is irregular with one cyst. The report does not suggest presence of a nodule or malignancy. Small thyroid, heterogenous in echotexture. no mass. ? small nodularity inferior lobe. RT nodule or heterogeneity gland. need interpretation
May need follow up : The provider who ordered the study should have been able to explain the findings to you and whether or not you need any follow up. There is a possibillity you may need a follow up test that looks at whether the areas of nodularity are active hormone producing tissue or whether they are cold spots in the thyroid. Cold spots often have to be looked at in more detail. ...Read more
I have been diagnosed with one 7mm cyst on my right lobe of the thyroid gland and one of 9mm on the left lobe. Can this cause dizziness and choking?
Multinodular goiter: Hi. Your hyper-functioning nodule is producing thyroid hormone without pituitary regulation. Since you have multiple nodules, chances are they're all overproducing thyroid hormone (aka "hot" nodules). Your radio-iodine scan will tell. Any "cold" nodule of certain size will need to be evaluated to make sure it's not cancer (you may not have any cold nodules). Treatment with 131-Iodine is easy. ...Read more
In follicular adenoma of thyroid gland , after lobectomy , is ther resk for other remaining lobe to develop follicular carcenoma ?
VERY LOW: In treating thyroid tumors the lesion present should be solitary and essentially cold on thyroid scan. At that time if surgery indicated should the lesion be relatively small and confined to one lobe it is possible to save the other lobe. Ca Dx is made when the adenoma shows evidence of follicular cells breaking the capsule. A second primary occurs in the other lobe in about 5% of patients ...Read more
A 0.3 x 0.5 x 0.3 CM hypoechoic cystic nodule with punctate internal echo is noted in the lower pole of the right lobe of the thyroid
Small nodule: Often cystic thyroid nodules can have denser regions called "punctate foci". If the nodule is not cystic those can also be microcalcifications, a finding that increases the risk of thyroid cancer. The key though is that the nodule is very small and therefore requires monitoring only, no matter what its nature may be. ...Read more

Possible biopsy: Many people have thyroid issues and have ultrasounds that can show a multitude of issues. Most findings are benign and typically are cysts. What is diffusely heterogeneous thyroid gland mean? Also have a 5x5 mm calcified nodule in upper left thyroid lobe. Help me understand this? Thx.
Nodule: Heterogeneous gland means you don't have a smooth gland. This typical happens in pts with autoimmune thyroid disease where the gland is attacked by antibodies. Thyroid nodules are common and mostly benign. You have 1 nodule and it's very small. You can just watch it for now. See your doctor for more personalized explanation. ...Read more
Ct results: low-density lesion in the left lobe of the thyroid gland likely reflecting a small region of colloidal degeneration or cyst more in nxt q?
Likely benign: This sounds like a benign thyroid cyst; thyroid cancers are generally solid tumors. If there were any reason for concern your doctor would order a followup ultrasound or needle aspiration; this does not sound concerning. ...Read more
I have trouble swallowing but not all the time. Sometimes I really have a hard time swallowling and other x no problem. I had CT scan show small calcific densities in right lobe of thyroid gland. Could this be the cause even though I don't kno what the ct
Need evaluation: There are many possible causes for your current symptoms. Although the ct showed "small calcified densities in the thyroid", it still might not be the cause for your difficulty swallowing. The next step would be a thyroid u/s to see if these "densities" are in a nodule and to see how many nodules & how big they are. Get the ct result, sit down with your doc and discuss the next step of evaluation. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Thyroid ultrasound: Your thyroid ultrasound was ordered by your doctor to evaluate an abnormal thyroid gland. Generally, we are looking for nodules or masses of concern. Happily no masses were seen. Heterogeneity is the characteristic of your gland showing variations in water content which would be expected findings in glands that are swollen or inflamed. ...Read more
If I had a thyroid scan that read: left lobe of gland is mildly enlarged at 5.8cm x 1.7 x 2.2 . There is a avascular 3 mm hypoechoic nodule in the lower pole of the left lobe. How would I know if it was " hot or cold"?
Ultrasound results: What you are describing are ultrasound results. A hypoechoic nodule of 3 mm of size is nearly 100% benign. The only reason to assess if a nodule is overactive (hot) or underactive (cold) is in general hyperthyroidism. If the nodule is hot, then it can be the target of therapy. This is done through a i-131 uptake and scan. ...Read moreSee 3 more doctor answers
