Complex Carb Vs Whole Grain
Not necessarily: There is no single diet that is best for everyone. I believe it is wise to minimize sugars and simple starches, but i believe a diet with whole grains, vegetables, fruit and low-fat proteins is healthier than a strict low carb diet (which is relatively high in fat and protein). See http://drrandybaker.Com/2013/01/20/diet-and-health/ for my essay on the pros and cons of various diets. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
What's the benefit of consuming complex carbohydrates (grains mostly) over simple carbohydrates (fruits, veggies)?
You got it backwards: Fruits and veggies are NOT simple carbohydrates! Simple carbohydrates are sugars and foods that easily break down into sugars, such as white flour, white rice, potatoes and juices. These readily raise our blood sugar, which is unhealthy.Complex carbohydrates are found in whole grains, most vegetables and fruits and generally contain fiber. These raise blood sugar less. See http://tinyurl.com/y8f4cagu ...Read more
It depends: Whichever one has the least amount of carbs is probably best; if you choose bread then choose whole grain bread. Consider whole grain crackers that also have seeds as those will be lower in carbs (such as mary's gone crackers). In following a low carb diet you don't need to completely avoid grains but keep the amount of grains relatively low; whole gluten-free grains are relatively healthy. ...Read more
Food Question: Both of these breads are just a bit better for your health than bleached flour breads but, just barely. They are still 100% carbohydrate calories and some brands actually also contain honey or other sugars to add taste. Eat 2 Beat CA, Pt.12: WHOLE GRAINS: For years, we've been urging our patients to eat three to five servings of whole grains a day. There's good reason: they are linked to a lower risk of colorectal cancer, as a 2013 Danish study of 108,000 people has found. What's more, whole grains offer protection against other chronic conditions, including heart disease & type 2 diabetes. (Ref: AARP, 5/2014) ...Read more
Yes: Because with whole fruits and veggies, you get the fiber which results in less consumption and quicker satiety (fullness). Smoothies have more sugar from the fruits and veggies due to more being used to make the smoothie. Plus, most smoothies have added ingredients like sugars, syrups, powders, etc - unless you make it yourself. ...Read more
No- not a grain: Ground flaxseed is a seed, not a grain. Whereas 75-90% of the calories found in grains come from carbohydrates, only about 20% of calories in flaxseeds come from carbs- the rest is (healthy) fats and proteins. Only eat freshly ground flaxseed or it is likely to contain rancid oils. See http://whfoods.Com/genpage.Php?Tname=foodspice;dbid=81. ...Read more

Is gluten free pasta ( maize starch, soy flour, potato starch and rice starch)with about 40 gm carbohydrates good for cholesterol ?
Does not matter: Since 90% of the cholesterol is produced by the body regardless of your diet, the above would not noticeably affect your cholesterol level. Do note that too much carb may not be good for your health. I don't believe extreme diet does anyone any good. Just eat anything in moderation and exercise at least 3 hrs a week will likely keep you in better shape. ...Read more
