New data: We have the advantage of living in a modern age of information; we now know that babies do just as well - in fact, better - if feeding of solid foods is delayed until 6 months. Only breast milk should be given during the first six months. ...Read more

For working moms who pump at work how many times a 2,5 old baby must suck breastmilk in order to maintain milk supply ?

For working moms who pump at work how many times a 2,5 old baby must suck breastmilk in order to maintain milk supply ?

Not clear: One of the few problems with breastfeeding is that there is no dial on the breast which tells you how much the child has eaten. You can just say he sucked 25 minutes or so but that doesn't answer the question as to how much he has sucked from you. If at the end he is smiling he has probably gotten enough. There are meds which can stim milk production. Metoclopramide x 5 d freq works. ...Read more

How far back into a pregnancy cord blood tests will show meth use? We are foster parents waiting for results on the baby and mom of our foster daughte

Not where we look: If I want to verify type or length of drug exposure in a newborn I check their first poop. The poop begins to form about 12 weeks into pregnancy and it remains metabolically inactive after it forms. It can provide data looking back several months, retaining trace amounts of the drugs. Some specialty labs do hair testing which can also yield data. Blood tests record more recent exposure. ...Read more

Staying at my parents house for a week-- we are sleeping in their basement. Don't know what radon level is-- ok to stay there for the week?

Staying at my parents house for a week-- we are sleeping in their basement. Don't know what radon level is-- ok to stay there for the week?

Yes: Without disrespecting any of my peers, or the folks in the government "who are protecting us", I'm not afraid of radon in the home. Nobody's shown any effect on non-smokers. A while back, radon-abatement was hugely political, since home-owners were forced to pay thousands of dollars per home to reduce a threat that, if it was even real, was tiny. Enjoy your visit. Best wishes. ...Read more

Baby nurses for 2-3 min then starts crying and refuses to latch on again. Good milk supply. Dr evaluated baby and said healthy.

Baby nurses for 2-3 min then starts crying and refuses to latch on again. Good milk supply. Dr evaluated baby and said healthy.

Not enought details: Is your baby growing well? If so, it's possible that you have an extremely rapid letdown, and baby is 'flooded' with milk in the first few minutes of nursing. If that's the case, baby doesn't want to latch on because he's full. If not growing, let down may be slow; pump a few minutes to get flow going, then put baby on. Have lactation spec. Or pediatrician watch you nurse-getting areola in? ...Read more

What are my rights with regard to pumping at work and in public?

No restrictions: There are no, and should be no, restrictions for breastfeeding or pumping. Feel free to feed and pump away (with as much modesty as you can manage), and ignore any dimwits that cause you any troubles. Your doing a great thing for your child and anyone who has a problem should be ashamed of themselves. ...Read more

Will taking 1 hit of meth at 18 weeks pregnant show up in babies meconium at birth in 22 weeks? never used again? she will be tested, along with baby.

Meconium: Think.. where will it all go , or `accumulate? But In Meconium which begins to form, I believe around 12 th or 16th wk. Drugs can be detected in Meconium by second trimester. If you stay clean and your UDS continues to be negative, they may not test Meconium. Whats the best vitamins for a new nurse having her duty on nightshift with so many patients to attend to?

Plan meals ahead: Many of us finished our grueling medical training by our early 30s. Those of us in OB and other fields kept up the 24/7 work. That is a rough life, and few retire healthy, it is said. Equally tough is working irregular hours or night shifts. It is important to have a schedule of exercise and healthy eating during the days off and while on duty. No supplement will suffice. A balanced diet is key. ...Read more

My friend used meth 1 time at 18 weeks pregnant, very small amount, will it show in babies meconium at birth, if she delivers at full term. in 22 week?

Meconium starts : forming between 12-16 weeks. The Chicago-based lab we used when I worked for the NV State Health Division claimed that their assay could detect illicit drugs in meconium used 6 months prior to delivery. A temporary decrease in oxygen from a "hit" of meth may cause permanent damage in some areas of the fetal brain. Encourage her to 'fess up, for her baby's sake & to get addiction counseling. ...Read more

I offer a variety of foods to my daughter but she's so picky and refuses to eat much at home. At daycare eats well. Multivitamin?

Multivitamin ok: Kids often eat one good meal a day and are picky at other meals; however, she may be eating well at daycare if they are catering to child favorites and offering limited veggies, fruits and lean meats. Review menus at daycare, and if that is the case, then continue to offer a varied diet at home, limit sweets, and eventually she will come around. Give vits with iron as iron deficiency more likely. ...Read more
