Combining Low Carb With Up Day Down Day
I take beta blocker in morn and CCB at night for high HR. there are times throughout whole day when my HR dips pretty low (sometimes into high 40's)?
Dizzy?: My first question is this: are you symptomatic when the blood pressure is low. By this I mean are you dizzy, light headed, short of breath or weak? If yes see someone immediately. If not you should probably see your clinician soon and have an EKG done to be sure there are no signs of a heart block or other problem. And lastly, is this regimen controlling your blood pressure adequately? ...Read more
I eat lots of sugar before bedtime I wake up the next morning with a higher than usual HR. Why is this?HR upon waking 75+. I take atenolol daily 75mg
Diet/HR: Blood sugar elevations may or may not affect your heart rate especially if you are diabetic or pre- diabetic. I suggest a formal glucose tolerance test by your PCP and certainly modifying your diet, avoiding bedtime sugar loading. Call for formal blood testing and also have your thyroid function evaluated. ...Read more

How do I speed up metabolism. Low energy post lunch, struggle to drop lbs. Work out twice a week, eat lean meats, sea food. Guilty of carbs, and wine?
Proper breakfast: Look into high intensity interval training, but eating right is key. Try making your first meal a combination of protein and healthy fats (bacon and eggs without the carbs) . The best fats to use are medium chain triglycerides because your body uses them directly for energy and then shifts into fat burning. Also if you avoid carbs your Insulin levels stay low and that inhibits fat storage. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Is alcohol okay with 25 mg of Zoloft (sertraline) once a day at night along with 5 mg of lotensin for high bp?
Can't say online: Best bet is to ask the physician who is prescribing these meds for you. Zoloft (sertraline) is an antidepressant / anti-anxiety drug. Alcohol is a depressant. So... Generally i would say that having 1-2 alcoholic beverages weekly is probably fine on this regimen, but having several drinks at once is a bad idea... In the end, check with your doctor about the specifics and about how much you intend to drink. ...Read more
If been over weight all of my life. Just started eating low carbs, trying to keep my carbs under 60 grams a day with one cheat day a week. Healthy?
Healthy diet: Eat a healthy well-balanced diet, 3 meals without snacks. Caloric restriction if you need to lose weight. There's no magic here. Find an eating plan you can follow the rest of your life, not a short-term diet. Check w/your registered dietitian. Don't try to overly restrict or supplement fat, carbohydrate or protein. No: Eating several small meals will not raise your metabolic rate, but may decrease your overall caloric intake. For instance, eating 150-calorie meal 8 times a day would give you 1200 calories. Most people require 2000 calories a day. This would mean he would have an 800-calorie deficit and would lose 1.5 pounds per week on this kind of diet. 2yo girl with 9 +11 at 53 instead of 60+ blood cell count with low grade fever and waking up at night screaming. What could this be?
See a pediatrician: Answered this yesterday, indicating that had no idea what the values (which blood cells?) you are quoting mean, but that no baby should be waking up screaming every night without some good reason, and the best and only way in which to resolve this is with a thorough history, physical exam and possibly labs and imaging studies. Can being exhausted from a 8 hour work shift and only 6 hours of sleep day to day cause an increased heart rate? I work late and work early...
Yes It Could: Exhaustion is usually a combination of mental and physical fatigue. In an otherwise healthy person, elevated heart rate could be the result of increased cortisol from disrupted sleep cycle, mild dehydration or combination of both. Suggest increasing your water intake while at work, be mindful of taking deep full breaths every so often, and taking time away from electronic devices before sleep. ...Read more

Why is my bg always elevated in the am? I am diet and exercise controlled, A1c down from 7.6 to 6.3, weight down 30 lbs., low-carb, high fiber diet.
Question?: Do you eat late or snack before bed? Sometimes what people eat late can carry over to the next am and affect the bs. The other possibility is dawn phenomenon. Is taking high protein140g/day low carb <150g diet safe?140pd male doing strenuous workouts for health&vanity.
Unsafe, unwise: I believe most extreme diets are unhealthy and unwise and this is a good example. I advise limiting protein to about 70 grams a day. Higher amounts puts stress on the kidneys, can cause osteoporosis and may reduce longevity- esp. if the main source is animal protein. I believe it's not wise to limit all carbs- but it is wise to limit sugars and starches. See http://tinyurl.com/hqxta7c and comment. ...Read more
Will eating low carb everyday(less than 30g)a day put me into ketosis? If not how can I get into ketosis? Im 5'3 217lbs
Possibly: Ketosis and ketoacidosis are different things. If your body senses it is not getting enough carbohydrates, it will start using fat to feed some tissues. This process increases the production of ketone bodies, which are acids. We all make ketones when we starve. A healthy diet needs about 50% of total calories to come from carbohydrates. In diabetics, ketones can be very dangerous. ...Read more

Is carb cycling (2 high carb day followed by 1 low carb day) long term safe for someone who is athletic and don't need to lose weight ?
Depends what type of: exercising you are doing? High intensity, triathlon, marathon, or short burst, walking, running, sprinting? If you are a long, term high intensity runner, triathlon, you need to have more calories (carbs) before hand to not burn up (or consume) your muscles as fuel instead of the carbs. If you just do mild exercising (nothing long distance), it will be safer. Moderation is key! ...Read more

Atkins Diet maybe: A low-carb diet limits grains, starchy vegetables and fruit — and emphasizes foods high in protein and fat. Many types of low-carb diets exist. "Carbs": This depends on the type of carbohydrates you mean. You need certain types for healthy body functioning. Vegetables & fruits are carbohydrates -- just as grains, potatoes, breads, and sweets are. However, sweets are full of sugars that raise your blood glucose too rapidly. Avoid those -- they'll make you store fat. Can eat high fiber veggies & fruits, beans, lentils, quinoa, brown rice, etc. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Mind change: "body type" / "endomorph" talk is mostly subscience. You'll get yourself lean when, and only when, you lose your taste for high-calorie, unnutritious food. Your athletic peers will reinforce this. It's great that you're doing a lot of cardio, but save the big empty-calorie tickets for when you're out with friends and even then, impress them by eating a salad. Ask your physician for guidance. ...Read more
I am on a low carb diet, every other day I do 40 minutes on a cross trainer and 30 minutes on a bike... Will i loose much weight this way? Or will it tone?
No way to tell: It depends upon your total caloric expenditure versus your intake. It takes 3, 500 calories to gain or lose a pound. Calculate your intake minus expenditure -- if the number is negative, divide 3500 by that number and the result is the number of days it will take to lose a pound. Focused exercise will, in general, help to tone you up, but there are many other variables. ...Read more
