My 18mth old cries inconsolably in accompanied playschool. He counts lights, rolls about, walks and identifies alphabets on the wall. Is he autistic?

Can't diagnose...: It isn't possible to diagnose autism based on the amt of info that you can give in this short question format. It is a complex diagnosis & requires that you discuss concerns with your pediatrician. Does your son make eye contact? How is speech? Just two questions that would be asked AND observed. What you described doesn't worry me BUT you are there and you are worried - talk to your doctor! ...Read more

At what age do late talkers generally catch up thier peers. My son is 2 y 4 m. Has vocab of 50 words 3-4 two words comb. Will goin to nursery help?

Development Testing: Before your son can be labeled "late talker", a medical or developmental disorder must first be ruled out. Child's past medical/family/development history is not given but is important to know. Be aware that hearing loss is a major cause of language delay in this age group and must be tested for. See doctor for a full medical and developmental assessment to determine true cause of speech delay. ...Read more

70 year old male with serious COPD. No other health problems. The skin on the back of my forearms has turned dark blue from elbow to fingers For1 year?

COPD: What's your question? See your FamilyDoc or Dermatologist re blue (cyanotic) skin. Perhaps it's due to low oxygen from COPD but that's not common place to notice first. Re COPD, there are several preventive inhalers & 1 rescue inhaler to consider plus some pills, maybe even steroids. If bad enough, may need oxygen. Bottom line, work closely w/FamilyDoc & Pulmonologist. Shots? Did you quit smoking? ...Read more

11 year old who urinates self, poor grooming, and add like symptoms. Recently began soiling self. Poor social skills. Is it signs of abuse?

One possibility: While abuse is one of the things in the possible reasons for this scenario, it is not the only one. There could be a neurologic problem leading to the soiling and wetting. There could be psychologic problems, with the number one disorder coming to mind being depression and/or anxiety in this age group. The kid's thyroid could be out of whack. This child needs a complete head to toe evaluation! ...Read more

8 month old fell on his face on a laminate floor while learning to crawl. While crying a little blood tinted clear boogers came out of his nose. Worry?

Mechanism?: Worry is a wasted emotion. His chances of serious head injury depends on many things. What was the height from which he fell? Was he dropped from a four feet distance or was he cruising and tipped over? The difference here is critical, the former being more concerning than the latter? Does he seem to be in pain? My 14 month old sits on his knees raises his hands (usually around bright lights) , grunts, shakes, and exhales. He is delayed. Is this autism?

Only 1 symptom: The diagnosis of autism requires your child to have a certain number of criteria to make the diagnosis. While the movement you are describing sounds like it might meet be one of the criteria, there must be a constellation of criteria to actually diagnose. You need to see a professional who is skilled in this area so appropriate diagnosis can be made and the right treatment initiated. ...Read more

I always wondered about my uncle. He liked to tease us as kids and roughhouse. Was he weird or somethign?

Maybe?: If he would not stop when asked or there was touching that involved genitalia - those would be problems. I imagine there are a few kids somewhere in the USA with extreme diets (enforced by well meaning parents) or with severe malabsorption problems who might have the condition.
