My patients frequently get headaches from the high salt concentration in the prep. You need to look at the prep and discuss with your doctor low salt prep alternatives.
It can also help to rehydrate with pedialyte post colonoscopy.

Regardless of type (lavage & osmotic agents, irritant laxatives, enemas) consideration should be given to: age, size, co-morbidlities, nutritional & hydration debilities, mobility, & help at home. Post procedure: Anytime a patient has a problem after a procedure, they should contact the gastroenterologist who performed it. While you are waiting for that response, it would be good to try fluids as tolerated, because many patients are somewhat dehydrated after a bowel prep and having not been able to eat and drink for a while. Really up to you: Doesn't sound like a rip roaring infection that should cause those procedures to be complicated. Your headache may subside easily in the next 24 hrs. & your "infection" may be just a nuisance virus. Your PMD or GI doc should advise you on postponement. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) would be safer. Do not drink alcohol.

Go see your doctor: When someone reports throwing up something that looks like coffee grinds, we worry about digested blood in the stomach, eg bleeding ulcer. Therefore, if you're reporting coffee grind appearance to your stool, it's a good idea to go see your family doc who can arrange for a repeat endoscopy since lots of Aspirin can lead to bleeding ulcers. Don't drink your prep too fast. You are more likely to get nausea and vomiting if you chug too fast. Also, don't chill your prep too much. Really cold liquids slow down gastric emptying.

You can have clear: Liquids the day before unless advised otherwise. I tell my pts to drink a lot of fluids with the prep to keep flushing the colon. You can also have broth chick/beef and jello (avoid red). Solid food is not allowed. Its worth controlling your hunger for one day than to have to repeat the procedure if not adequately prepped. ...Read more
So why does there seem to be more fuss about colonoscopies vs upper? Is it more to do with the preparation required and the chance of incomplete exam?
Colonoscopy.: Not sure what you mean by "fuss, " but it is true that preparing your colon for a colonoscopy is more difficult than just not eating after midnight to prepare for an upper endoscopy. However, if you take the preparation properly, more than 90% of colonoscopies are completed without difficulty. Just follow the instructions that your doctor gives you and it should go well.
