Could I have colon hydrotherapy as a substitute for the "standard" prep for a colonoscopy? Normally use enemas.
If it clears you out: The main purpose of colon prep for colonsocopy is to clean out the stool so that the camera can see the linings of your colon. The 'standard prep" works well because it has been done a gazillion times. No: Colon preps are carefully studied to get the colon clean enough that the endoscopist can carefully examine the lining of your colon and not miss a polyp or tumor. Colon cleanse does not get that kind of study and may or may not work. Likely to interfere: I am not sure any studies have been done to actually confirm the effect of bowel prep on BCP, but anything that significantly alters the diet or digestion, including antibiotics, have been known to interfere with absorption of the pill. Possibly: The prep called GoLytly is polyethelyne glycol which when ingested causes an outpouring of body fluid into the GI tract which can lead to dehydration. It is more important to have a bland diet without roughage several days before and use a Fleet enema (sodium bisphosphate) to clean the distal colon.
