Cold That Starts With A Cough
I just ate an orange and it started irritating my nose and throat. Now I have a cold and starting to have cough. What is the cause?
The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more
Not usually: Cold usually presents with runny nose, blocked nose, fever, body aches and it can cause post nasal drip causing sore throat and cough especially at night. It started off as a cold however I started to get. Cough 5 days ago which when Is worst in the morning I wake up feeling like my airways are all block?
Some colds take: Longer than 5 days to resolve. Other possibilities include a secondary bacterial infection like Bronchitis or Pneumonia, which would require antibiotics. Do you have a history of Asthma or Hay Fever? Colds can activate Asthma and cause persistent cough, increaced mucus production, and shortness of breath. If persists or fever develops, you must c an MD. Cheerio.

I have a cold and today I started coughing and I can hear a wezzy sound and I cough so hard I throw up is this normal?
I'm breastfeeding, suffering a cold with running nose, start of a cough. What safe medication could I take beside vitc. Is comitrex safe? Thanks
OTC antihistamines: When you are breastfeeding, you can generally take meds that were allowed during your pregnancy. You may be able to take over-the-counter antihistamines such as claritin, zyrtec, or Benadryl (diphenhydramine) without any risk. Drink lots of fluids and use saline in your nose. Call your doctor if you have a fever >101 or not improving.
Acute bronchitis: Is a viral disease characterized by prolonged, excessive coughing. The most common symptom of acute bronchitis is a cough with mucus. Acute bronchitis is a one-time condition that lasts for several weeks. Drink plenty of fluids and otc medication. However, pneumonia can have symptoms like acute bronchitis. Rec. See your pcp to rule out pneumonia.
I've been sick w/ a cold lately, and started coughing up lots of mucus, & wheezing as well. In the past I've also had Bronchitis. Cold or Bronchitis?
Mgt: I would advise checking your temperature, if you have more than 24 hours of fever, an evaluation to rule out pneumonia is indicated. If this is an uncomplicated common cold, you should start to feel better soon. For your wheezing, I would advise using your Albuterol and following your action plan. In the meantime, rest, stay well hydrated and monitor your temperature.
Have got bad cold. Just started coughing really bad can't breath also very bad pressure on my chest also chills fever. Painful. Should I be worried?
Not much to do: Not much to do to help babies at this age. Antibiotics do not kill viral colds and will not help. Cold medications are not approved for use at this age either. You can try nasal saline and bulb suctioning to get the snot out. I find that sitting in a hot, steamy shower (the water should not touch the baby - just sit in the steam) with the baby upright to get the snot to flow out, will help.
Virus/ allergy/ bac: There are many viruses, allergens and bacteria that can cause a cold and a cough. Most people will improve with time and many meds can help with symptoms. If symptoms persist more than 1 or 2 weeks or if they are severe seek out your doctor for help. Hope you feel better soon.See 1 more doctor answer
Hands., ..: Typically, an upper respiratory infection occurs after the bacteria or virus gets on your hand and then you touch your eyes/nose/mouth. The bacteria or virus then multiplies until you develop symptoms of infection. This is the reason that frequent hand washing helps to decrease the infection rate. A cough due to infection is transmitted the same way.
Fluids, extra rest: Cold and cough medicines do not shorten the illness and probably won't help much. Extra sleep, some juice or water (both fluid and vitaminc), and some time in a steamy bathroom or a humidifier will do more than medicine. Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Ibuprofen might help the aches. Otc cough meds like Mucinex or delsym can be used carefully at night, but not if there is asthma and not in the daytime.
Depends...: If the cough is productive and due to infection, you may not want to suppress it as this is the way of ridding your body of the infection. See you doctor for evaluation to determine whether or not the cough should be treated with cough suppressants or allowed to run its course.
