Stomatitis: If this is your first time with cold sores, this initial phase is called primary herpetic gingivostomatits. It is usually accompanied with a low grade fever and will last 10-14 days. I would recommend seeing your dentist for information about this and the chance of recurring cold sores. Many causes: Strep throat can certainly cause irritation of surrounding tissues. In addition, fever from strep can cause "cold sores" (=oral herpes, which 98% of us have) in your lips, gums, mouth, throat, or even esophagus. There are medications to help shorten the duration of the cold sores; see your doctor about this. Warm salt water gargles (1 tsp salt in 8 oz warm water; swish, gargle, spit) help. ...Read more
