It hurts to swallow, have cold sores in mouth, swollen glands in neck, and somewhat achy all over; what would cause all these symptoms?

Viral illness.: Most cold sores are caused by the Herpes simplex virus. Especially the first time you get the infection there will be other symptoms besides the sores like aching, sometimes headache or fever and or swollen glands.

See allergist/immuno: It appears that you may have an immune problem and recommend that you consult an allergist/immunologist. One of the conditions to be ruled out would be cyclic neutropenia in which your WBC gets very low periodically but impairment in the immune system can cause the same problem as well.

See your Doctor.: Some people do not respond to antiviral medications right away and some strains of herpes can be resistant to treatment. The neck pain needs your Doctor's evaluation as soon as possible.

Canker sore like sores that are spreading fever swollen neck glands painful to eat, talk, swallow canker sore or cold sore virus? Help!

Canker sore like sores that are spreading fever swollen neck glands painful to eat, talk, swallow canker sore or cold sore virus? Help!

Cold sore virus: It could be herpangina or gingivostomatitis. Herpangina is often caused by the hand-foot-mouth virus (coxsackie virus) & can cause a lot of pain from sores at the back of the throat usually have a high-fever with this. Gingivostomatitis is most often caused by herpes type 1 virus, and these sores are more often around the lips and oral mucosa closer to your mouth. Strep is a possibility as well.

Cold sores in the throat, what dose it mean and is it common age is 48

See below: Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus 1. Over half our population gets cold sores. Another 25% of our population has this virus but never gets the symptoms. They appear on average about a week after exposure and can last up to three weeks. This virus stays in the body even after the acute outbreak is over. Once the virus enters the body, it never leaves. I have cold sores on my mouth and suspect it has spread further down into my throat, I'm nursing my baby, what can I do?

It is self limiting: Cold sore in the mouth do not need any treatment and will go away by itself. As long as you do not kiss the baby there will be no problem nursing the baby and you can continue to breast feed.

Throat infections: Don't be scared, but I would still recommend seeing your primary doctor or an ent. They should be able to figure out what is going on. Feel better!

Shared a cigarette with a guy who may have had a cold sore...been five days and now I have a sore throat, but no other symptoms, could I have hsv 1?

Very low risk: HSV isn't so easy to transmit. Usually it take fairly intimate contact, like kissing. It is unlikely you sore throat is due to herpes, especialy if there are not blisters/sores on your lips, in your mouth, etc.

Should I take a friend that's been sick for a few days to a clinic or er? Cold, sore throat, back pain 4 days.

Yes: If you feel your friend needs to see a doctor they probably should. Try to avoid the er unless the symptoms are a lot worse than you seem to suggest. Your friend will certainly not feel better if they have to wait for hours to be seen while more urgent problems are being dealt with.

Started with cold sore on cheek, sore on roof of month, feel like sores in throat now painful red dots on tip of my tongue.

Could be serious: This sounds like an innocent disease called herpangina from a virus that mostly affects children. And it is possible you have it, if you are exposed to children. However, you are 62. At this age some other more serious things could be happening and I would urge you to see a clinician soon. Meanwhile for comfort you can use warm salt water gargles and Tylenol. Good luck!

First cold sores they are covereing my bottom lip and half the top throat hurts, gums hurt, cankor sores, all over. Can't eat. I'm miserable. Help?

Stomatitis: If this is your first time with cold sores, this initial phase is called primary herpetic gingivostomatits. It is usually accompanied with a low grade fever and will last 10-14 days. I would recommend seeing your dentist for information about this and the chance of recurring cold sores. A prescription for an antiviral medicine could also aid when the tingling begins at the onset of a cold sore.
