Other sources: 80-90% of all adults are positive for the antibodies against herpes simplex 1, meaning they have had an active infection sometime in the past. Follow up: dr. Raff -- you said that canker sores do not cause genital herpes. Are canker sores herpes simplex 1 just like a cold sore?

Could you give some one herpes simplex 1 if you don't have a cold sore/fever blister?

Maybe: The herpes family of viruses are very common. Some people will get outbreaks, others who are exposed may never have an outbreak, and only with a blood test will find out they were ever exposed. I have herpes simplex 1 and get cold sores on my tongue and inside cheeks can I use the same over-the-counter products as i would for a lip cold sore?

May be oral aphthae: Herpes inside the mouth is uncommon. Oral aphthous ulcers are much more likely. The cause of oral aphthae is not known; sometimes oral ulcers are associated with other diseases or with systemic medication. There is no standard (nor very successful!) treatment for oral aphthous ulcers. Check with your doctor to see if he or she can make a more definitive diagnosis and treatment plan. ...Read more

Hepes Simplex 1: Is generally an ssue above the waist while HSV2 is below the waist but you can have either in either place. In theory, either can be spread at anytime but they are both more likely to be spread during the prodrome (warning) or actual outbreak stages of the lesion. Chance are small that if he hasn't had an outbreak in a year that he could give it to you but it is possible. ...Read more

Different Causes: Hsv & aphthous ulcers can both benefit from in-office laser therapy (takes less than 5 minutes and significantly reduces pain and length of the presence of the lesions. Hsv episodes can be reduced and on occasion "prevented" with a daily Valtrex (valacyclovir) regimen. Aphthous ulcers, unless you are lucky to have pinpointed what cause yours to surface more readily, there is not a medication that you can take. ...Read more

Why do I get canker sores on my tongue instead of a blister on my lip? I have herpes simplex 1

Different animals...: Canker sores aren't to be confused with cold sores (which result from herpes virus). Canker sores are not viral, and they are not infectious - they are similar to other immune type reactions, such as dermatitis, etc, and are frequently related to stress (local or systemic). The lesion on your lip would more likely be a cold sore, and your tongue is a more typical place to get a canker sore. ...Read more
