Doctor insights on:
Cold Sore That Won T Go Away
Have a canker sore or cold sore won't go away I'm scared and my vagina burns and I deal with depression and kinda in a bad place right now?
Multiple issues: Cold sores are on the external lips & respond well to topical lemon balm oil whereas canker sores are on tongue, gums or inner mouth & respond to licorice lozenges. There are many causes of vaginitis but it's readily treated-see a doc for diagnosis/treatment. While meds can help depression, exercise, counseling & supplements can help too. Vitamin/mineral deficiencies & hypothyroidism can contribute.
I'm on valrex. There is a huge, cold sore and I'm putting oitment on it constantly, but the swelling won't go away! Any other ideas?
Possible infection: Cold sores can become infected with bacteria although they are initially caused by a virus. When that happens they are worse than usual and resistent to usual therapy. You could try antibiotic ointment but I would recommend seeing your doctor for a culture of the sore and appropriate antibiotics if things continue since rarely a fungus can be involved.
Difficult: There is no overnight cure for cold sores. You can reduce the length of outbreak by early use of prescription antiviral medications as well as topical creams. Discuss treatment / prevention options with your doctor.
Possible, but rare: Very unlikely. If you see a dentist at the very earliest signs of a cold sore developing (the itch or tingle stage) and your dentist treats it with a soft tissue laser (without actually touching it) and treats it with activated oxygen (ozone) and had you apply ozonated olive oil, it will go away much faster, but probably not overnight.See 1 more doctor answer
Prescription.: Your dentist or doctor can prescribe medication called orabase with Benzocaine that will help with the pain I laser these with my waterlase md dental laser. Takes 2 minutes to treat and relief is in 1 hour to 24 hours shortening the 10 day cycle. Most "cold sores" will run their course in 10 days and can be triggered by stress sun or a herpetic virus.
Cold sore: Most often 7 to 10 days, as little as 4 days sometimes. Shorter time course with appropriate medications.
NO: But it will not hurt. The best way to get a cold sore to heal faster is to take prescription valacylovir 2 grams or Acyclovir 4000-8000mg at the very first tingling (prodrome) warning that a cold sore is coming. The longer the delay the less effective it is, so you need to have it handy for immediate use. Forget about any creams: they don't do much. Forget about lysine because it does nothing.See 2 more doctor answers

Got first cold sore 6 months ago after planning a stressful event. I still have them now (early and late symptoms). How can I make it go away?
Cold sores: Melissa officinalis or lemon balm (cream) expedites healing of cold sores. It can reduce healing time by half. Studies also show that regular use can help v recurrences. Brief supplementation with lysine 1, 000mg orally three times a day at the onset, can also hasten healing. Your physician can prescribe oral valtrex (valacyclovir). Laser treatments are also used to treat cold sores.
I have what looks like a cold sore on the side of my tounge was bad a few days ago but is now startin to go away should I go to the dr or wait it out?
Can wait: As long as it's improving, evaluation isn't needed. Avoiding nuts and oatmeal may be helpful in clearing cold sores. Taking lysine, an Amino Acid supplement may help cold sores clear faster too. The usual dose is 500mg twice daily.
Generally 10-14 days: Without medication each sore takes 10-14 days to go away. However, you can have multiple sores that come up before one resolves and some people always have an active sore soemwhere. Your dentist or md can prescribe meds to help prevent outbreaks.
No: Cold sores are due to an activation of a virus in the tissue. These often become visible when there is irritation including excessive sunlight, colds and other stresses. A garlic clove may further aggravate the area.
