Cold Before Surgery
I am having back surgery in 6 days and I may be getting sick. Is it safe to take this cold medication, before surgery?
Yes but tell surgeon: Best not to be sick prior to any surgery especially spine surgery. Best if you have a cold to postpone surgery. Speak to your surgeon and the day of surgery the anesthesiologist may advise you to delay surgery till you are healthy. ...Read more
Call your doctor: Call your surgeon and explain what's going on. If you have fever or are coughing up secretions, it might be best to delay surgery. But if this is just a mild cold, it may resolve without any problem. Also depends on the type of surgery you've having. Always best to be in prime health before surgery and anesthesia. ...Read more

Hi I got cold after septoplasty is it common? Safe? Its my 3rd day after surgery what should I do?
Home remedies: You most likely have developed a viral infection post-operatively. The viral infection should have little effect on the final result of the septoplastly. The healing process may take a little longer. Fluids, vitamin c and time are all that is necessary. The surgeon might want to take the pack (splints) a little early. Ask your surgeon. ...Read more
Tell your doctor: If you have a cold, the surgery will likely be postponed until after you have recovered until this is a life-threatening situation. If it is an allergy, it can likely be treated before you undergo the surgery. Sneezing may make your incision site very painful. Regardless, contact your doctor to find out what should be done. ...Read more

Can you go in for an operation if you have the common cold? If I have a cold will my surgery be postponed?
Maybe: It depeds on your overall health and the length or type of surgery that you may be having. If you are having fevers or a lot of coughing, then surgery may be postponed. If there are only symptoms such as irritated throat or nasal congestion, then surgery may be alright. If it is a longer surgery that is planned, you would not likely want to have a lot of coughing after surgery. ...Read more
I have surgery friday and am going to have a general anesthetic. Will I have to reschedule if I'm sick with a cold?
Surgery and a Cold: Possibly. Both your anesthesiologist and surgeon will conduct a focused history of this illness and do a physical exam. They will then assess the risk of undergoing an elective procedure in the face of your current health status. Fever, a productive cough, malaise, reactive/congested airways can increase your risk of complications peri-operatively. ...Read more

I took six cold FX tablets - the last of the two yesterday morning (contains ginseng). I'm having surgery on Wednesday... Will my surgery be delayed?
I doubt it: Ginseng can have an effect on bleeding/clotting time, but the effects are more pronounced if you are also taking aspirin/other blood thinners. While most would recommend avoiding ginseng for 7 days before surgery, 72 hours should be fine. Be sure to tell your surgical team about it, but I don't think your surgery will be delayed. Be sure to avoid the aspirin related products. Best wishes:) ...Read more

My son has tetralogy of fallot. He is a month old & hasn't had surgery yet. I have a cold. Would it be very dangerous for him to catch it?
Yes, possibly: Keep in mind that infants in general have smaller airways, smaller reserve and can have more significant symptoms and morbidity than adults. Now add to this that this pt has a congenital heart lesion and you can understand that you want to try to keep this pt as healthy as possible, and although he may do well with a cold, his likelyhood of not doing well is higher than the general population. ...Read more
Going in for surgery on sep 27. I have a cold can I still have anesthisia? Went to doctors just a cold nothing more. Really don't want to cancel.
Probably: A "cold" will resolve by 9/27. If, however, symptoms persist or worsen (a productive cough, fever, muscle aches) let your care team know. Elective surgery would then have to wait; "reactive" airways due to irritated mucosal linings would add a small, but significant, risk to anesthesia. Prudence, then, dictates waiting until that "cold" is on the downswing. ...Read more
