Maybe: Asthma symptoms are cough, wheeze, shortness of breath and/or chest tightness that is recurrent. It typically worsens at night and with exercise. There are multiple triggers including allergies, smoke/irritants and even acid reflux. An allergist or pulmonologist can perform a history, exam and lung function tests to help determine if asthma is the cause. ...Read more

Cough (Definition)

The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

2 year old with croup cough should I take him outside at 39 degrees!? Is cold air beneficial!?

Croup: For many years we have recommended cool mist humidification for croup. If the stridor (the deep wheeze on breathing in) gets worse, we will suggest taking the child outside to breathe in the cool night air while being wrapped in a warm blanket. If not effective then I suggest going into the bathroom and steaming the child. @ tsp of honey can be soothing to the throat and aid in settling the cough ...Read more

Diagnosed preasthmatic because I cough too much at times. Using inhaler stops it, but it can start again. Coughs triggered by cold air, smoke, perfume?

Sounds about right: Not sure what the question is. There is a cough-variant asthma and it sounds like you have that and that it is triggered by cold air, smoke and perfume. If you are using the inhaler more than once a week to stop the coughing fits then you should see an allergy/asthma specialist for further evaluation and treatment. ...Read more

2months-breathing is funny. Feels like my bronchi are inflamed and "URGE" to cough, occasional wheeze. Off and on. Cold air worsens. Allergic to air?

Breathing issue.: This could be a number of things. Asthma comes to mind, with shortness of breath being triggered by the coldness of the air, or by irritants or pollutants in the air, or by exertion or activity. Could be allergic rhinitis with a post-nasal drip, which can interestingly cause a cough, breathing trouble and wheeze at times. Do you smoke? Because this could be related to smoking as well. ...Read more

I have been feeling like I am inhaling cold air for a week now in my lungs/chest. When I breathe in really deep, I need to cough. No other pain.?

Cough on inhaling: May be reactive airways/asthma. You indicate it is like breathing cold air, which is a form of ashtma called cold induced asthma. May be allergy induced asthma. Would follow up with PFTs and pulmonary doctor. You may benefit from an inhaler. May also be related to gastritis or acid reflux causing reactive airways so can try ranitidine/ prevecid and see if helps. F/u w/ doc ...Read more

I hav talking induced dry cough that last for several weeks after exposure to cold air, air condition& after influenza infection. Any help about reasons?

Reactive airways: Hello Tarek,

Sometimes after a severe respiratory infection, the cough can linger for a few months. The airways can become inflamed and spasm. Certain triggers can cause this to occur including excessive talking, laughing and cold air.

If it persists beyond a couple of months, you should see your local doctor to ensure that there is not another reason for the cough.

Throat feels like it keeps clenching in cold air and hard to breathe. Could it be bronchitis? Taking benzonatate for cough isn't helping.

It could be but: We do not have enough information to tell you what it might be. But you have cough and difficulty in breathing in cold air. It may be bronchitis of bronchial asthma and you should have it checked by your doctor as you will need a detailed history, physical exam and if indicated pulmonary function tests etc, to make the correct diagnosis and treat it appropriately. ...Read more

Not every cough: Come from the respiratory tract, sinuses, middle ears, reflux all can cause or increase cough. The post tussive vomiting you described is typical of uncontrolled asthma, untreated sinusitis or reflux. Orapred burst is fine but still might not have touched the real cause (s). She isn't on controller therapy for her asthma, check aaaai. Org or acaai. Org for an allergist for comprehensive management ...Read more

Asthma: You appear to be suffering from asthma and perhaps acid reflux as well (worse when lying down). Recommend that you consult an allergist since there is suggestion that you may have a sinus infection as well. Do not delay. If you can't get to see an allergist within the next 24 hrs, go to the ER. ...Read more

Feels like I'm breathing in a lot of cold air, dry throat, coughing, especially at night. What could be wrong?

Mouth Breathing: People who mouth breath at night when the air is cold and less humid often dehydrate their mouth and throat to the point of wakeing up and coughing. Also breathing cold air is irritating to the mucosa in the back of your throat. When you breath through your nose, the air is warmed before it hits your throat. If you can't clear your nasal passages, try sleeping with a surgical mask. ...Read more

Just getting over viral bronchitis still have some coughing but when I breath in it feels like cold air in my throat?

Yeah it does that: The area gets overly sensitized. This might be from inflammation, in which case any of the asthma medicines might help. Far more likely is that the viral illness killed off the surface of the respiratory tract and it's going to just have to grow back. Takes days to about a week. ...Read more

Could cold air coming from air conditioner make you sick?

Could cold air coming from air conditioner make you sick?

Could be a factor.: A virus is required to catch a cold. Cold, dry air ^’s nasal mucus production ; viscosity. Mucus is part of our body’s defense mechanism. It traps viruses ; other particles. When the mucus is thick (sluggish) it makes removing viruses more difficult. Another function of the nose is to warm cold air before it moves to the lungs. Capillaries in the nose dilate to bring warm blood to the nares. As. ...Read more

Can being cold (temperature) or being in cold air (temperature) make you sick?

Usually not...: It's possible for anyone to catch a cold, especially in the winter months, but that is not related to being in cold air or playing outside building a snowman. Colds are caused by a variety of viruses. In a few cases, cold temperature can kill a person (if one gets lost in the woods while skiing, if one falls into the cold ocean, etc...). ...Read more

Is taking shower and going out directly in the cold air that bad? What can it cause?

Not a problem: Hundreds of millions of people shower in the winter and then go out to take on the world. A shower before going outdoors does not cause any medical problems merely because it's cold outdoors. Keep clean, stay healthy, and enjoy that refreshing cold winter air (but avoid people who are coughing and sniffling, because they'll get you sick). ...Read more
