Supposing someone i know has an allergy to codeine (anaphylactic reaction), can they still be safe taking derivatives like hydrocodone?

Supposing someone i know has an allergy to codeine (anaphylactic reaction), can they still be safe taking derivatives like hydrocodone?

No: If they truly had anaphylaxis to codeine, almost any other opiate will do the same thing, because they are all chemically closely related and are metabolized to Codeine and morphine, which is actually the active product that reduces pain. There are non-opiate medications (opioids) like meperidine, fentanyl, Methadone and others that are different and should not cause reactions. ...Read more

Hydrocodone (Definition)

Hydrocodone or dihydrocodeinone is a semi-synthetic opioid derived from two naturally occurring opiates: Codeine or thebaine. It is an orally active narcotic analgesic and antitussive. It is available in tablet, capsule, and syrup form. It is used to treat moderate to severe pain or as an antitussive to treat cough. Hydrocodone affects pain by ...Read more

Hydrocodone allergy.. Please help me find a substitute?

Try anti-inflamatory: Pain medicine is tricky. That's why there are pain management specialists. There is controversy over the effectiveness and side effects of Darvon if it is still on the market where you are. Sometimes drugs like motrin, advil, (ibuprofen) alleve, or even Aspirin are more effective than you would think. There are side effects to taking too much of these like stomach and kidney issues. Questions, ask dr. ...Read more

How does the strength of codeine compare to hydrocodone?

How does the strength of codeine compare to hydrocodone?

There are many rules: and they are all inaccurate, because the individual differences in how these drugs are metabolized are so great that odds are good any table is going to be wrong. However, in general, codeine is the least potent of all the opioids, with 60 mg being the equivalent of 5 mg of oxycodone and probably 7.5 mg of hydrocodone ON AVERAGE. This is if taken by mouth. IM codeine is more potent - about twice. ...Read more

If someone is allergic to codeine, would it be okay to take hydrocodone?

Maybe...: This generally depends on what kind of reaction you had to codeine. I don't usually recommend you take hydrocodone if you had a severe allergic reaction (i.e., hives, swelling, difficulty breathing, etc.). One thing about codeine, however, is that it can cause itching as a side effect, and this isn't necessarily an allergy. If that's all that happened, you may be able to try it. Talk to your dr. ...Read more

What is the difference: hydrocodone vs. Codeine?

One semi-synthetic: Codeine is a naturally occurring chemical found in opium, along with morphine and papaverine. The problem is that Codeine is poorly absorbed (like morphine) and higher doses are needed for it to work, in addition it has histamine effects like sneezing, itching and GI distress. Hydrocodone adds a molecule to codeine, where it is better absorbed and more potent, with fewer histamine side effects. ...Read more

Is there a difference between hydrocodone an codeine?

Yes : They are different meds. Both meds are considered opioids and work on the mu receptor in different ways. Codeine gets broken down to morphine in your body to work and hydrocodone does not need to be broken down to work but it has metabolites (broken down products) that cause pain relief as well. ...Read more

Help can codeine sulfate and hydrocodone show up as the same in a simple drug test?

Help can codeine sulfate and hydrocodone show up as the same in a simple drug test?

Yes: Drugs tests look for 2 essential chemicals when they look for opiates - Codeine and morphine, which are similar compounds and they are both converted into each other. Hydrocodone is metabolized into Codeine which is then transformed by acetylation to morphine. These are the final common pathway products for most, but not all, opiates. Oxycodone produces relatively little, is has separate test. ...Read more
