Clindamycin Side Effects Diarrhea
Is diarrhea a common side effect of antibiotics, specifically clindamycin? What if my breastfed baby gets diarrhea, too?
Clindamycin can cause diarrhea and this can become very serious. A mother that is breastfeeding can pass Clindamycin to the baby via the breast milk, and the baby can develop diarrhea.
Clindamycin diarrhea can lead to a bowel infection of c. Difficile which can be extremely dangerous. It is extremely important that you call your doctor and the babies pediatrician immediately. ...Read more
Part of the lincoside family. It has good gram positive an anaerobic coverage, but its association with the development of clostridium difficile infection has limited its use. I am suffered from folliculitus decalvans & am taking rifampicin &clindamycin but causes me serious diarrhea shall I quit?
Common: There is commonly an entity called antibiotic-induced diarrhea that occurs and is benign. However, there is also a more serious condition call c. Diff colitis that can occur with certain antibiotics (like clindamycin) due to the killing of all of the bacteria in the colon except for that one particular one. ...Read more
I am taking 500mg clindamycin 4x daily. I 1/2 done with them. Yesterday I began having diarrhea. How do I know if is serious like c. Diff?
Hi, its difficult to clinically make a call if the diarrhea is c diff related or not.
Clindamycin on its own can cause diarrhea. The best course of action is to consult with the physician who prescribed it and see if you can swap it. If the diarrhea stops after the swap then you have the answer. If it continues then stool tests need to be done for c-diff or other causes. Keep urself hydrated. ...Read more
My Dr prescribed clindamycin oral 600mg/6h for 30 days to treat recurring boils, Isn't this too much? I have diarrhea with 1 day on this med.
Maybe..: It does sound like a lot but I don't know the full scope of your case. I see that you have a history of skin abscesses which may be why your doctor put you on a long duration of antibiotics. If you are having diarrhea, talk to your doctor - he can probably switch to something else. Also I would take probiotics with it!! BE well! ...Read more
Am taking clindamycin for folliculitis decalvans as my dr ordered me but it causes me continuous black diarrhea for 10 days, shall I cute it?
Started clindamycin treatment June 2nd for 5 days. Had diarrhea for about a week. Diarrhea now back (23rd). Normal effect or possibly another cause?
I am currently taking clindamycin HCl and am experiencing diarrhea (getting worse each day). My infection is gone, should I stop taking my medicine?
Diarrhea and antbs:
Please see your doctor.
There is a very strong association between antibiotics and diarrhea.
I can not recommend you stop your treatment. There is a specific number of days you should be on it for whatever infection you have/had.
It might help if you keep your diet as bland as possible, hydrate well with water, go grab some probiotics or yogurt with probiotics, and see your doc asap. ...Read more

I took clindamycin for 2days, my 4m baby and I got diarrhea but ER says 2days is not long enough to get c diff and her lbm will go away. Is this true?
Clindamycin: While c.Diff is always a concern with any broad spectrum antibiotic, Clindamycin certainly has been implicated as being responsible for c.Diff. However, Clindamycin can cause diarrhea on it's own, not related to a c.Diff infection. Clindamycin can cause a colitis but not often after only 2 days. If the drug is stopped, stay hydrated and inform your doctor. In most cases the diarrhea should subs. ...Read more
Was taking clindamycin 150 mg 4 X day for 2 days now I have persistent diarrhea I stoped takeing it my pharmist told my to take Imodium (loperamide) to stop?
Diarrhea w/ antibx: This is a very common side-effect of antibiotics, but it doesn't mean you're allergic. Just that the normal bacteria in your gut are getting killed off and aren't able to help digest your food. You can use imodium (loperamide) to help firm your stools and stop the diarrhea. Read the package instructions and don't take too much. Then tell your Dr that you need something else for the infection s/he was treating ...Read more
Talk to your doc: You should talk to your doctor first. While the Cleocin (clindamycin phosphate) (clindamycin) may be the cause of your diarrhea, stopping the antibiotics may be dangerous. This isn't a decision you should make on your own. ...Read more
Can topical clindamycin cause constipation? I read it can be linked to colitis, but I have no diarrhea, bleeding or pain. Any relation?
Clindamycin effects: Clindamycin is an antibiotic used 2 fight acne, so topical preparations are used for that. As with any topically applied medicine, there is absorption through the skin. Clindamycin is linked with a side effect known as C. Diff colitis which can be very bad. Constipation however has nothing to do with the med or this side effect. Probably u need to drink more, as the colon reabsorbs water. + Fiber2 ...Read more
Diarrhea returned 3weeks after taking clindamycin for 5 days. Yogurt (probiotics) made diarrhea better. Possible in the case of c difficile colitis?
Clostridium: CDiff does have a significant relapse rate. It has to be 100% liquid in order for the lab to process the sample. Young people can tolerate symptoms much more than the elderly or ill and therefore tend to go on with the infection a lot longer before seeking treatment. It may resolve spontaneously. But better if you go to your primary, ID or GI doctor. Avoid clindamycin in the future. ...Read more
I was given clindamycin 300mg for eczema treatment. Ever since I took it, I have had diarrhea. What should I do now before specialist?
C. diff infection: Until proven otherwise. Clindamycin is infamous for causing diarrhea, and specifically for being the agent most associated with developing Clostridium difficile (C. diff) infectious diarrhea. If you have this condition and you use things like Immodium you can develop a deadly complication called toxic mega colon. It may be simple diarrhea, but you can't afford to be wrong. You need a doc ASAP 2day ...Read more

On zithro 4 infection. Came back, put on cleocin, (clindamycin phosphate)quit 2 days in do 2 diarrhea, put back on zithro. Treated at ER 4 dehydration. Diarrhea back. What can I do?
Diarrhea: You likely have an antibiotic caused diarrhea called C. Difficile. This is treated by specific antibiotics and may need to be treated for a prolonged period. If they have not done stool samples checking for the toxin of this organism they need to do so. You should call the ER and see. Cleocin (clindamycin phosphate) has a reputation for this but any antibiotic can cause it, and we are seeing it without antibiotics. ...Read more
20 weeks pregnant. Started taking Clindamycin but Dr told me to stop after a day bc cramps and diarrhea. Will stopping make my Group B Strep grow more?
Can I stop taking clindamycin after 6 days? I'm taking clindamycin for a cellulitis infection in my gums from an absessed tooth. It is causing bad diarrhea and my dentist told me to stop taking it. I am concerned that the infection could return.
I have to disagree: With the advice imparted so far. If you asked your doctor who was the prescribing physician and he told you it was okay, then you may listen to your doctor. While, I agree with the idea of a resistant bug possibly being created, one possibility would be to simply change the antibiotic say from clinda to zithromax. (if pcn allergic). Incidently, what if the diarrhea was c. Diff? ...Read more
I'll be taking the Rx Clindamycin for a tooth/gum infection. What is the best way to avoid the diarrhea and stomach upset from this (yogurt?)?
Good probiotics &...: Clindmycin is an excellent choice for dental infections. While there is some risk of C.dificile, other antibiotics can cause that as well. I advise you take Sacchromyces boulaardi (sold as Florastor) and Culturelle, both widely available in pharmacies, both during and for 2 weeks after your Clindamycin. Also avoid sugar and simple starches while taking antibiotics as well. ...Read more
