Clearblue Fertility Monitor Medication
How reliable/accurate are OTC digital ovulation tests and monitors such as the clearblue fertility monitor?
OPK: They reliably detect urine lh, but less good for predicting ovulation. Since lh is nature's trigger for ovulation once a follicle is mature, we assume ovulation follows in the next days. This is true in textbook cycles, but is variable in real life. Ironically, they work best with clockwork cycles, and less well for women who are less predictable. ...Read more

Lh increases around the time of ovulation and these tests tell you when your lh levels are indicating ovulation will occur in the next 24 to 48 hours. Fertility monitors measure electrolyte concentration in saliva or vaginal secretions, giving you an often accurate prediction of when you will ovulate. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Could be normal.: The menstrual lining develops and is supported by the hormones released from the ovary (estrogen and progesterone) If the hormone levels drop, then the lining loses some of that support and may start to break down. This happened every month when the progesterone and estrogen fall at month end when there is no pregnancy. It sometimes happens with a drop in estrogen after ovulation mid cycle. ...Read more

How accurate are devices such as the Clearblue Fertility Monitor in determining if a woman is ovulating/able to conceive? Are they worth the $150++?
Expensive/Confusing: The Clearblue Fertility Monitor watches for the LH surge and also monitors estrogen. You have to buy the monitor plus monthly test strips and this is expensive. I don't personally recommend it as I have had women get very confusing results. I prefer the simple LH surge detection kits. They are a lot cheaper and I have found the results less confusing. Irregular periods: suggest anovulation (not ovulating) which, of course, leads to infertility. You need to work carefully with you OB/GYN or fertility specialist at this point. ...Read more
