What medication to use for tight chest. Get worse at night. Used linctopun, theopen and clear cough syrup. Please advise.
The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more
Symptom: Cough is a symptom. It is the way to get materials out of the lungs, bronchial tree and upper airway so as to preveent infection. If one is coughing, it is the underlying cause that needs treatment. This could be minor (cold) or severe as with pneumonia. For a simple cough, otc meds like delsym (dextromethorphan) work. For more sever cough, your doctor may prescribe a narcotic cough supressant. Cough is good! ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Depends...: The best treatment depends on the etiology of the cough. Are you coughing at night when you lie down? If so, this could be due to post-nasal drip which has a very different treatment than bronchospasm (which is another possibility). Other etiologies include gerd which also worsens when lying down. All these possibilities have very different treatments. See your doctor for diagnosis and treatment. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Reflux or allergies: If you are not home between these times... I would strongly think you might have allergies that are causing your symptoms. If there are pets in the house... That may be what is causing this. Another condition that can cause a nightly/ early morning cough is acid reflux. See your local ENT for further evaluation. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Control symptoms : This may be viral. Control any fever that is present. Over the counter medications that have a nasal decongestant with cough suppressant would work the best. Drink plenty of fluids and get rest. If your symptoms do not improve over the next two days, you should see a doctor. Lack of resolution of symptoms suggests a bacterial infection. ...Read more

I have had a cough for over 2 months. I have tried many OTC medications with no help. What could be causing this?
Rest, fluids, suppor: Without knowing the cause of the cough, I'll assume it's viral (influenza epidemic in US). Most viral illnesses run their course in 10-14 days (but less than 5 days if you get flu vaccine). In the mean time, notify your doctor, rest, drink plenty of fluids (urine run clear), & keep tissue handy. Cough syrups (with Guafenisin) can help thin mucus, as does chicken soup & humidifier. TTYD. Good luck. ...Read more

I have had productive cough for 3 days. Now, it becomes excessive and it annoys me. What kind of medication should I take to relieve this symptom?
Anti-tussive: Anti-tussive is a fancy term for cough medication. In the States, these are available over-the-counter w/o prescription. I don't know about Cambodia. However, this assumes that your cough is due to a virus. Best to see your family doc for an evaluation to be sure it's nothing more serious. With that said, you don't need antibiotics for viruses. So don't ask for antibiotics but be sure not pneumoni ...Read more
